I don't recall any water or foliage on Coruscant. Actually that was kind of the point of the place; the entire planet had been overrun by skyscrapers.

I guess any time some people see a cluster of tall buildings, they think "Star Wars."

The trailer looks like it's doing what it's supposed to; trying to grab the attention of NON-fans since the existing base can't pay for the big-budget Trek they've been pining for. We'll find out if it works in May.

I guess people are forgetting this version of Kirk is different- his dad didn't raise him, his step dad did, also that bar brawl takes place before he joins the Academy, before he starts to become a responsible adult, and before Capt Pike gives him a pep talk that challenges him to become a better person. Personally I'm kind of excited to see the character arc of this brash kid becoming the cool captain we all know.

Thats what I'm looking forward to seeing when the movie comes out. it's a different take on it (and I do wonder if they'll have Spok mention the differences - though 95% of the audience won't care so theres little point) but at the core of it are the characters and if they were going to make a prequel what better idea is there to have Jim Kirk begin to walk the path of a legend or hero?

Finding the point in Kirks life that turned him from being a dick to a hero could make a good movie. And with a different timeline and history, it reminds me a little of Nemesis - would a Jim Kirk with a troubled childhood have the potential to be the same hero he became with a more stable background?

And if I get to see Uhura strip... then woohoo to that too.

General thoughts. A lot of the flash and quick cutting I expected in an ADHD Stupid Bowl commercial, but overall, nothing too cringeworthy.

I did like seeing the big E in one of her Beauty angles. One thing people don't realize about good starship design is that the best ships are the ones that look good overall, but look REALLY good from a lot of different angles. Incidentally, that's one reason I never really liked the NX-01. It looked like a pancake with legs from just about every angle.

But the shot from the new trailer, the one from just under and to the side that we see in the trailer is one of the shots that the TOS 1701 and the refit looked best from. It's good to see that that shot, and even though I'm not sold on the new ship, it did look good from that angle.

I just think people are a little put off by by it because Kirk was supposed to be a "stack of books with legs" who "never had any fun" in the Academy- according to his best friend Gary Mitchell in the TOS pilot.

I'm wondering if this alternate time line is about a 30 to 35 year period that deviates from the original, from the time of Kirk's birth until he becomes Captain of the Enterprise. Old Spock is able to steer it back to the original as close as possible so that it eventually "meets" the original time line as we all know it.

I think I could accept that more than a completely different time line that opens up. I mean, if this is a totally new time line, then what's the point of Spock going back to "fix" it? If there are an infinite number of alternate universes with different scenarios, why is it so important that Spock tries to fix this one, unless he restores TOS as we know it (except for that 30+ year alternate "bubble.")

I like what I see so far and am looking forward to it!

That looked pretty good, I liked the delivery of "The Line" myself, and am starting to adjust more and more to what this movie will be even if it's not the particular direction I might have wanted.

Anyone know where I can download an HD version of the new commercial?

It's not HD but if you use www.keepvid.com and save the high quality .mp4 file version and play it full screen using quicktime it looks pretty good. Maybe hold you over for now.

Couple of observations:

People who don't like the 'Why are you talking to me man' aren't putting it into context. This is Kirk before he joins the academy, he is drunk and he has just been beaten up and hes getting a talking to as though hes a little kid (well hes acting like one) therefore he is going to say something like that.

Its been made clear that Kirk is going to transform during the movie from this into the one we know.

The 'woohoo' is being shouted by the redshirt who then promptly dies.

I like what I see, especially the visuals. The Enterprise looks great. Also, Kirk, McCoy, Pike and Uhura seem spot-on from what I can see. Bravo, JJ, bravo.

Looks like the port and starboard phaser banks can fire forward. Cool! Always seemed like they'd be able to.

I love the drill smashing San Fran. bay and the cadets running around!

The more I see of Bruce Greenwood, the more I think he's an awesome Pike.

And, if people could open their ears for everything except just things to pick at, they might hear how Starfleet Pike sounds. It's very refreshing for me to hear the contrast between how people in Starfleet sound compared to Civilians. McCoy always gave indication not everyone on Earth speaks Starfleet and now that idea is expounded.

It's not bad for a WB (er, CW) bad boy. And I get why they felt they needed to change the character from the "positively grim" (Shore Leave) "stack of book with legs" (WNMHGB) for the new audience. I just can't get behind it. Nor can I get behind the idea that Kirk is somehow so "special" that, even in world where circumstances re-shape him as a self-destructive, self-indulgent brat, he towers over Starfleet officers with much more training and experience. But hey, this is the age of douchebag baby day-traders (and we see how well that's worked out) so I guess its all part of the zeitgeist.

The more I see this the more I want to give it a shot, but at the same wanting to give paramount a big FU it took until star trek XI and getting a better producer/director JJ to shoot visually showing Star Trek with a big budget can be, not to say the previous trek films didn't do a good job with there budgets like Nemesis, First Contact, Wrath of Khan, Undiscovered Country. I wish this film all the luck just wish paramount was using this amount of money previously.

I think those of us who aren't thrilled at the JJization of Trek (myself included) just have to go into it hoping for a good movie and enjoy whatever Trek we get out of it.

Just look at it with non-Trek eyes and see if it's any good.

I think those of us who aren't thrilled at the JJization of Trek (myself included) just have to go into it hoping for a good movie and enjoy whatever Trek we get out of it.

Just look at it with non-Trek eyes and see if it's any good.

Not the biggest fan of JJ's either but I do like some or his work, and I have to say wow based on the commericals so far, and the new energy he's has helped bring back to Trek. There have been a few trek film commericals that made say this can be really good; Nemesis,First Contact,Undiscovered Country and Generations, Star trek XI is now part of that list

I wonder what that's going to be about? I think right before that we see what I assume to be Nero's ship in orbit? Hmm....

I believe that's the business end of the Giant Space Drill, and that it's at a much lower altitude (two or three miles up, say) on the other end of a tether from Nero's ship.

I don't know that they're really changing him, though, since that (bar brawl) incident is supposed to take place before he buckles down to become the serious, "positively grim" cadet -- in the commercial, Pike is issuing him a challenge to straighten up -- and who would even later become the "stack of book with legs" and "think or sink" instructor Gary Mitchell knew. I've seen people in real life go through major attitude shifts like that, so I'm not seeing it as a problem here, or at least not yet.
