Summon the Thunder (Spoilers)

I finally finished this one, and have posted a review on my site: http://julioangelortiz.net/?p=230

In a nutshell: loved it to bits. I'm dying to read the next installment, and if it's as good as the others in the series, it'll be worth the wait.

I never was into any books relating to the TOS-era (pre-Lost Era). But reading Vanguard has me curious about other books. For example... *gasp*... I'll be picking up Burning Dreams, something unthinkable for me over a year ago.

Wow!

What a great read. Such in depth insight into all of the characters is such a joy to read.

This novel read like an epic SF movie. I also picked up the Forbidden Planet vibe, one of my all time favourite movies. The scenes in which the Shedai warriors attacked were absolutely rivetting.

Kevin/Dayton: I just finished the new book. I liked it a lot, despite its lack of turtle sex.

A question, though: What was your reasoning behind giving the Romulan ship a matter/antimatter reactor?

Good, but still a disappointment compared to Harbinger. Indeed I consider that one of the all time great Trek novels, so it's a hard act to follow. Summon the Thunder is fairly successful then, but suffers from pacing problems and a writing style of overly long sentences that I found disagreeable.

I finished reading STT earlier this week. Just want to say "thanks' for a fun read.

I loved the LOST references.

Not having watched Lost, there is no way I would have spotted that reference, but thanks for the info. To be filed away under useless bits of information.

Did anybody catch the Lost reference?

Of course: to protect his accounting files, the Zakdorn had to enter his access code every 108 minutes.
Yeah, I did catch that and being a huge Lost I got a real kick out of it.

For those who have expressed interest, I've posted a set of annotations for Summon the Thunder. I don't do this sort of thing very often, but...the last few evenings have been kinda slow. :)

They're not meant to be an exhaustive list, and I may go back and update them if I spot something I missed the first time through (or if Kevin points something out). It's also wise to note that the page contains spoilers not only for STT but also Distant Early Warning and Harbinger. Consider yourself warned.

Very nice. I love the idea of Gek as a Tellerite Marshal Flinkman, and I sadly didn't even notice the PotC reference.

Very cool annotations, Dayton! As always, I learned something new and laughed a little.

Finished it a few days ago...Awesome. I have to say, I have found the 3 Vanguard stories to be quite original...especially from a character point of view. I can't wait for the next one, and I am hoping for another SCE book with the lovell at Vangard. Keep up the good work.

^ Jack Bauer? With the crap scared out of him? Better get yourself a new handle, bub. Try for something a little more pansy. Like Jack O'Neil or John Sheppard. Or Keith.

Glad you dug it. :)
