One question--when the sentinals are busting through the forcefields, do I detect a tip of the hat to the Id monster in Forbidden Planet, or am I digging too deeply into the bin of geeky homages?

What? Us, make a covert (or maybe even overt) reference of some sort? Surely you jest.

Now that I think about it, is it even possible to dig too deeply into the bin of geeky homages? And don't call me Shirley.

Did anybody catch the Lost reference?

Hey, on a side note, we should make awards for the best ST writing - heaven knows the writing is top notch already, but can ANYONE beat the current crop?
Psi Phi used to sponsor a yearly award from Trek lit, but nobody stepped up to administrate it for 2005.

Tut, tut.

Hey, KRAD, really enjoyed Soleta: Revelations in the No Limits anthology, great laugh.

Almost finished that one now. Then on the other anthologies i haven't yet read.

Really looking forward to Mack's Whirlwind

I started reading the book yesterday, and while I haven't got far, I must say my favourite character is the Endeavour's transporter chief. I think he should get his own series!

I finally finished StT this afternoon and just wanted to say, great work, guys! Based upon the timeframe in which this story takes place, once the Romulans showed up, I was just waiting to see how they would connect it to the events of Balance of Terror. After the ship lost its warp drive, I actually came to the crazy solution that maybe this was the ship seen in BoT (I quickly dismissed it however since they were in a totally different area of space and it was an entirely different crew as well).

I think you guys have done an excellent job of balancing a story which has such a HUGE number of important characters to keep up with. I don't think I ever ended up feeling lost. I think the only major character who wasn't featured as heavily in this novel was Desai, but that's understandable.

I know I had more I wanted to comment on about the book but it escapes me at the moment so I'll post again later.

Just finished STT over the weekend. A few random thoughts/comments:

OBVIOUS SPOILERS ABOUND!!!

I never once felt like any of the characters in this large ensemble got the short end of the stick...each had something to do in genuine situations, which was good to see and better than just "sticking them in just to have them show up again in the next novel." Zeke Fisher (yes, Morgan Freeman...) is becoming a favorite of mine...his exchanges with Reyes and Desai are some of my favorite in the entire book.

I have a feeling we haven't seen the last of Sarith and the Bloodied Talon. I know it was implied that they should self destruct but it also seemed in the end, one last fight was what Sarith was leaning towards. Loved how their exploits and those of the senate in the epilogue are heading towards the events in BoT. Excellent!

Shedai Sentinels = the Black Smoke from LOST anyone? I thought all of these scenes were done very well. Very cinematic feel here...

Nice twist with Anna and T'Prynn. I kept wondering how we were going to get around the fact that T'Prynn could simply know Anna's secret identity and intentions by slipping a little mind meld in there during their...ah....sessions, if you will :D

I'm sure there is more, but these things are what comes to mind at this early hour. Excellent job, Ward and Gilmore!

^ Thanks for the comments. Glad you liked the book!

Nah, not really, but I can understand where one might think that.

(Of course, as we don't yet know who/what controls the smoke and what it's really for....who knows? :))

Excellent job, Ward and Gilmore!

As much as the image of Bubba as the previously unknown Gilmore Girl cracked me up (and frightened me more than a bit), his last name is actually "Dilmore." He takes so much abuse from me, I have to look out for him whenever possible. :)

AGH!! I hit the "G" button when I meant to hit the "D"...so sorry! My apologies...

As for the LOST black smoke reference, I did not mean to insinuate that you were copying the idea, just that is what I first thought of.

Just a couple more thoughts that have come back to me:

When it was mentioned that Anna is working for T'Prynn, there was some reference made to her (Anna) now being an operative for two significant spy agencies. I was wondering whether anyone had the thought that T'Prynn could be a part of Section 31 or whether this would just be referring to Starfleet Intelligence.

Also, I was a little uncertain as to whether this revelation of the two working together is meant to suggest that they've always been working together (since before book 1), or if this is a recent development, or if this is supposed to remain unknown at this point in time.

And one other thing that confused me a bit - the cover of the book shows two people walking along the top of the starbase. While I know that the covers are not always the best indicator of what is going to happen in a book (especially in some of the older ST novels), I had been expecting this to be a depiction of some plot point of the novel (as book 1 showed the Enterprise at the station). I suppose now though that it was just meant to be a pretty picture.

Well, no--it is something from the story: the arrival of the Lovell. You've simply focused on one detail and thought it was more important that what the image overall is depicting. :)

One quick question, what exactly are the events of 'Balance of Terror" that are forshadowed in StT?

A Romulan Bird of Prey destroys several Federation outposts along the Romulan Neutral Zone then attempts to escape under the cover of their cloaking device. It also marks the first time humans actually see what a Romulan looks like, and find that they are strikingly similar to the Vulcans.

I buy my books mostly in Ebook format. Now I notice that this is available in Microsoft Reader format. I've been trying to buy my books in Mobireader format. Presently it's not offered in that. What's the determining factor , when and if a book gets released in one format or the other?
