Suits who don't understand sci-fi

I always love press releases and quotes that say: "I know nothing about this, or at the very least I don't care."

You'd expect better from the UK SCI FI Channel, but alas not.

With them acquiring the rights to Dollhouse and Knight Rider (FYI two clear signals the shows won't last) they gave this press release statement: "The special effects in both series are genuinely show-stopping".

Well it'd be funny if they did stop the show, but in all my years of fandom I have *never* heard people say they have graviated to a show becuase of special effects. It shows what a narrow view they have of fans and what could draw them in.

They damage the press release further by going on to talk about the shows being "likely to be the subject of many water-cooler moments for fans," when this is such an American term that would again not engage with the UK audience. Indeed most people if you spoke to them in an UK office 'at the water cooler' wouldn't even wach the SCI FI Channel as it's so niche here.

It's a little sad that such people can get a series and then announce in such a corporate machine way. Even the likes of Sky One try to put across that they're actually excited about their programming.

I thought this was going to be a thread about Fox Executives.

me too. LOL

Or NBC, ABC, CBS or the CW. Burn them, burn them all!!!!

Are there any networks people don't loathe? Maybe HBO, Showtime and AMC are in the clear. And Animal Planet. Everyone loves Animal Planet. :D

Knight Rider is dead and Dollhouse is as good as. Don't go gettin' attached!

I hate HGTV. That network should be banned for middle-aged people. The number of times I've had to dissuade my parents from starting yet another money-pit project they saw on HGTV...

Fictitiously yours, Trent Roman

Showtime killed off Jeremiah and Odyssey 5. They basically gave up on their great sci-fi shows all at once (SG-1 and the Outer Limits, included). They're not even close to being in the clear. :p

HBO murdered Carnivale on a cliffhanger no less.

YES THEY DESERVE TO DIE, I HOPE THEY BURN IN HELL!!!

Okay, that just leaves AMC and Animal Planet...Any ideas...?
Well, I do find those Animal Cops shows kind of depressing.

I don't think I've ever watched anything first run on AMC. Don't they show Sopranos reruns though? Does that count? Probably doesn't matter as it got all manners of critical acclaim. But I'm still going to the grave hating it.

To play Devil's Advocate, I'd point out that a hell of a lot of sci fi "fans", on this board and in other places don't seem to understand much about sci-fi either. ;)

AMC is a joke, a wheezing, suppurating shadow of what it once was.

Turner Classic Movies is the only old movie channel worth watching, though Fox Movie Channel shows some promise...

...and suits don't "get" ANYTHING except profits. It isn't like they "get" cop shows or medical shows or reality shows... they just throw felgercarb at the wall and see what sticks.

...Dollhouse doesn't particularly HAVE special effects....it's a spy show, basically. I can't even think of particular "special effects" they've used.

And the Knight Rider remake was a laughingstock of laughingstocks.

Pretty much what I thought too.

You're right. I have no idea what that means.

It's a term for gathering around the bottled-water dispenser in an office, one of the places it's socially acceptable to meet briefly before your boss cattle-prods you back to your cubicle. So a "water-cooler" moment is one of those TV "events" so big that it's a major subject of conversation the next day -- i.e., Janet Jackson's "wardrobe malfunction", etc.
