Suits who don't understand sci-fi

They damage the press release further by going on to talk about the shows being "likely to be the subject of many water-cooler moments for fans," when this is such an American term that would again not engage with the UK audience. Indeed most people if you spoke to them in an UK office 'at the water cooler' wouldn't even wach the SCI FI Channel as it's so niche here.

You're right. I have no idea what that means.

You don't know what a "water cooler moment" is? Maybe I just watch too much American telly, but I've heard it loads.
To be fair, Sci-Fi channel isn't that niche. It gets better ratings than Discovery, Yesterday, or FX and fairly comparable to Virgin 1.

Years ago, most offices had a water cooler where employees would sometimes congregate. Typically, they'd congregate around the water cooler when something spectacular occurred on a particular program the night before and discuss it at length.

...and suits don't "get" ANYTHING except profits. It isn't like they "get" cop shows or medical shows or reality shows... they just throw felgercarb at the wall and see what sticks.

:guffaw:I have known that since I was ''13'' when ''TNT'' Cancelled ''CRUSADE'' before it even AIRED!:wtf: in favor of, wait for it...''COP-SHOWS'' & Re-runs of cop-shows from other NETWORKS!:wtf::eek::guffaw:I can laughe at it now, but at the time I wanted to ''KILL'' those :censored: at TNT.:shifty:

...Dollhouse doesn't particularly HAVE special effects....it's a spy show, basically. I can't even think of particular "special effects" they've used.

Well, those are the best kind of special effects, aren't they?

There's a channel dubbed Yesterday in the UK? What kind of programming does it air? Historical stuff.. Documentaries?

Yep, used to be called UKTV History. The UKTV channels have decided to get a bit creative with their names. They now have Dave, Daveja Vu, Alibi, Blighty, Eden and others are changing their names over the next year or so.

.."Dave"? :D Guessing that's like out SpikeTV? Tv targeting male viewers?
Daveja Vu-I can't even guess their angle :cardie:
Alibi-crime/detective shows?
Blighty :wtf:
Eden-Porn?! Nahhh. Right? :alienblush:

Suddenly syfy doesn't sound all that weird.

Yeah, Dave is aimed at men, mostly comedy stuff.
Daveja Vu is a timeshift version of Dave an hour later.
Yeah you're right again with Alibi.
Blighty was UKTV People, it shows documentaries/fly on the wall stuff about the lives of people in this country.
Eden is a documentary channel about nature/gardening shows stuff like that.

To be honest, I prefer their brand of creative naming, to just making the name sound phonetically the same as before but spell it different.

Are there any networks people don't loathe? Maybe HBO, Showtime and AMC are in the clear. And Animal Planet. Everyone loves Animal Planet. :D

Showtime killed off Jeremiah and Odyssey 5. They basically gave up on their great sci-fi shows all at once (SG-1 and the Outer Limits, included). They're not even close to being in the clear. :p
HBO murdered Carnivale on a cliffhanger no less.

YES THEY DESERVE TO DIE, I HOPE THEY BURN IN HELL!!!

Oh right, HBO is evil. How could I forget? :klingon:

But Jeremiah and Odyssey 5 aren't in the same league as Carnivale, so Showtime is still semi-okay. And they have Dexter, which compensates for a multitude of sins.

AMC has Mad Men and Breaking Bad. Who watches old movies on TV anymore when they're all on DVD now? AMC is eventually just going to stop showing old movies entirely.
