"Stranger Things" final season on hold

Most of the Stranger Things cast in question outlasted their shelf-life to sell as high school "teens" long ago.

They are only late teens and early twenties now. If COVID hadn't happened, their ages would have stayed mostly consistent with their characters.

There have been a few shows and movies over the years where the "teenagers" started out older than the younger cast members are now.

Didn't they say back when the last season aired that there would be a time jump for the final year?

There really needs to be one. The kids were looking a lot older between seasons three and four, too old for the amount of time that supposedly passed for the characters. Trying to maintain the illusion that only a few months have passed since the mall attack in S5 would have been too difficult.

I think it's a fair bet that every show currently in the writing phase of their production cycle is going to be on hold until the dispute is resolved. That's kinda the whole point of a writers' strike, no?

Looks like production would halt on Stranger Things even if it were past the writing stage. The Duffer brothers wrote on Twitter:

Duffers here. Writing does not stop when filming begins. While we’re excited to start production with our amazing cast and crew, it is not possible during this strike. We hope a fair deal is reached soon so we can all get back to work. Until then -- over and out. #wgastrong

Good. I'm glad the strike is hurting the studios' ability to function. That means it's working. I hope the studios come back to the table and make a fair deal.

Yeah, I’d rather see production halted than see Netflix release a terrible product just to get it out on time. There were too many awful movies and shows released after the last strike forced them to go ahead despite not having writers on set.

Good for the writers, bad for us audience but i'm absolutely willing to wait for my entertainment if it means the writers ( the most important part of the process in my opinion) get paid fairly.

As to the age discussion - it was inevitable from the start when you cast pre-teen kids for a show that pumps out a season every 12-18 months at best. At that age development is very rapid and could be noticeable even with a 6 month gap, puberty sometimes works fast. So either you plan ahead and include some small time jumps, have a tight production schedule all lined up ( that gets shot up by a global pandemic) or you ignore it.

Apparently Stranger Things is using a mix of all 3 ;)

Yeah, we're all just gonna have to suspend disbelief a little bit on the kids' ages for S5.
No kidding:

I just happened upon an interview with Caleb McLaughlin, who plays Lucas and, yeah, if they didn't need a time jump before this, there's no way can they seriously avoid one at this point:

No kidding. Even if he shaves the facial hair, he's clearly matured physically, and cannot pass for any sort of a high school student--unless Hawkins Board of Education has a policy in place to hold students back as long as a...decade.

A time jump would help matters--only one has to wonder what condition the Max character would be in after the passing of even one year?

Wow, yeah we're definitely reaching the point where it's going to be getting really hard to buy them as high school students.
