I don't mind development of background characters but yeah, TOS and ENT worked just fine by focusing primarily on their respective Main 3s. Even VOY basically left Chakotay, Harry and B'Elanna hanging to focus on The Doctor, Seven and Janeway.
In TOS, Uhura wasn't one of the show's main cast, which is why she never got her own episode. If they've made her main cast in SNW, it implies they have something of note in mind for her.I really hope they will give each character at least some focus, and not end like TOS where, in 3 seasons we, for example, never had an Uhura episode.
True, the early seasons of Game of Thrones, for example, managed to fit a very large cast of characters into 10 episodes, though they had the advantage of having a clear arc for every major character.A well-written show can do a great deal to richly flesh out its cast in a shorter-season format.
I hope you are right, not only do I look forward of seeing more of Uhura, but I also tend to prefer ensemble casts to shows that focus on one or two main characters. In TOS, Uhura wasn't one of the show's main cast, which is why she never got her own episode. We can only hope SNW will manage that too.
Well, most of these characters have a clear end to their story arc in SNW:
Pike: Fleet Captain, Beep Beep
Spock: TOS
Chapel: TOS
Uhura: TOS
The others are blank slates, but that makes it more interesting.
I agree I don't want Uhura turned into the next Bryce/Rhys/Detmer/Nilsson kind of thing where they're just cardboard extras. At the same time, it's going to be depressing seeing Uhura saving the day in Strange New Worlds and all the characters gushing about how she'll make Captain in 5 years or whatever, knowing full well she's going to stay as a communications officer on the same ship for the next 30 years.
As a cadet it makes sense that you might see her doing time in other places as well. I mean most Starfleet officers seem to be pretty well rounded in their skill sets. We have seen her work on circuits as well so maybe she spends some time in main engineering also.I want to see SNW Uhura move from Communications to Navigation for a time (to account for the Corbomite gold and her acting as relief navigator for short periods in Season One TOS).
It's a deep cut that subverts modern-day audience expectations about the character, who are so used to seeing her as solely a communication specialist.
In a parallel universe, or paralel evren, if you will, Spock stayed on the star track.Spock himself serves in the command division during the timeframe of "WNMHGB(TOS)," which isn't long after Kirk takes command. It's possible Spock accepts a department change in 2265 since he's no longer serving alongside Pike and chooses to strike out on a new course in his career but quickly realizes how much the new Captain needs him to perform his old science duties and switches back to sciences blue by 2266.
