Strange New Worlds Contest - Rules Question (No Story Ideas Posted)

I have a rules question concerning the new Strange New Worlds contest that Pocket Books is running. Mods, if you feel that this question would better fit in the Fan Fiction Forum, feel free to move it there. I just thought that there was a greater chance of finding someone in the Lit Forum who might know. I can ask my question without getting specific to my plot.

In the list of rules for the contest, I saw this:

d) Stories that deal with previously unestablished death of a Star Trek character, or that establish major facts about or make major changes in the life of a major character, for instance a story that establishes a long-lost sibling or reveals the hidden passion two characters feel for each other.

Does this rule apply only to main characters, or to ALL previously-established Trek characters? I understand that a story where I say, killed off McCoy, would not be accepted, but do you think that killing off a guest star who was never brought back in onscreen Trek would be permitted?

I ask because the plot I'm developing doesn't really work unless this particular character dies. I couldn't really do a debilitating accident instead.

Does anyone know for sure? Thanks in advance!

My guess is that you couldn't kill Reg Barclay or Kevin Riley, but Taurik and Helen Noel would be fair game. None of these characters are "major" (that would be the main casts), but the first two are semi-regular while the latter two are not. It's a difference of degree.

Again, that's just my guess.

That's more or less what I was thinking, too. The character I was planning to kill off was someone who only appeared in one episode, so they're not a recurring character by any stretch of the imagination.

Maybe I could solve this problem just by being a bit oblique as to whether or not the character is dead. A mysterious disappearance with the character being presumed dead might be able to work.

The important thing is that for my climax to happen, this character has to be offstage with next to no chance of ever coming back.
