Straight from Moffat: 2010 is Series 11.1

Moffat was talking this evening at the International Screenwriters' Festival in Cheltenham and was asked why next year's Series was being called Series 1 and his reply was that the Marketing people wanted it changed and told him it could either be Series 1 or Series 31 and he picked 1. And then the next time he talked to them it had become Series 11.1

But he added that really it'll always just be "the new series" and people should call it whatever they want.

And Series 5 wasn't even an option??

And then the next time he talked to them it had become Series 11.1
Which even makes less sense than "Series 1"! Where the hell does "11.1" come from?? Did they just pull a random number out of a hat? :wtf:

It shall be Series 5 to me, thank you. You know, the series that comes after Series 4. :)

Er 11.1, 11th Doctor series 1! Makes perfect sense! :)

The "11" would represent that it's the Eleventh Doctor, and the ".1" represents that it's his first season.

If we're going back and retroactively renumbering the previous seasons like this, would Eccleston's season get any ".x," since it's his only season?

^ Exactly. Although now that I understand the "11.1" thing, it does make a bit more sense. I wonder if the episode # would get added to that. For example, the first episode would be 11.1.1, then 11.1.2, etc.

I can understand using 11 as well, the 11th Doctor, it also speaks to all the changes to the show, he sees each Doctor as a new series.

I think when the DVDs come out, they will say S5.

Given that he was told that they didn't want it sounding like an "aging brand" (yes I know how stupid that sounds for a nearly 50 year old show) I'll bet a shinny penny it says "The 11th Doctor - The Complete First Series" or something similar.

im going with S5, its the most simple option

It's not S5, unless you ignore S1-S26!
It's either Season 31, or season five of the revival. 11-1 seems Ok to me as a way of avoiding fan wars over the subject!!!
Unless, of course, you reckon it should be 19-1 in view of the Brain of Morbius faces!

does that not depend on if you see New Doctor Who as the same show as Classic Doctor Who, I dont, the TV Movie in a way splits them up, not to mention the lack of 8th - 9th Doctor regeneration, I see the two shows as separate shows about the same character.

To be honest if you're gonna divide the show up in that way you could argue that they're 11 different shows!

Imagine the chaos with the new numbering system if it's ever learned that there was an earlier *forgotten* doctor (with the doctor's memory erased).

As odd as 11.1 seems, I approve since it lacks any leading zeroes.

JJ Abrams could learn a thing or two from Steven Moffat.

as I mentioned, part of my seeing NewWho as a new show, is the lack of regeneration, not to mention the rather large gap between it & the Classic series, was the TVM, and TVM and New Who.

Not to mention the fact that new Who started with S1

I like it. The Doctor Who season numbering isn't nearly convoluted enough with all of this Series One/Series 32 (or whatever).

I think that the next season should be called "Series 11.1" and the following series should be inexplicably called "Series D".
