UFC 129: Randy Couture vs. Lyoto Machida

It's not fair that he's teaching them the Karate Kid crane kick. If done right there is no defense...will miss you Randy.

I wonder why they even bother with wearing gloves if they are allowed to kick in the head. I don't see no protectors on the feet.

Yes, although the kind of gloves UFC fighters wear don't even do much to protect the striker's hand. From what I understand it's actually mostly a PR thing. The rules in the UFC used to be slightly looser in the 90s and the sport had an extremely bad reputation, with John McCain famously calling it "human cockfighting" and trying to get them to fold completely. Introducing gloves was one of their measures to be more "respectable" and mainstream, to make it look more like a sport and less like a backyard streetfight.

No it's not splitting hairs at all. The hand breaks far easier than the head so the only thing the cushioning does is enable the fighter to strike harder and more often. That's why boxers die in the ring fairly frequently despite the heavy, pillowy gloves, and MMA fighters don't.

What has it got to do with Seagal? (who, being an aikido-ka, doesn't really use kicks, so certainly isn't known for them)

Seagal doesn't only practice Aikido. And I think he trains a few UFC fighters. Or gives them seminars, or whatever.

Steven Seagal has been training the guys at Black House where Machida trains at. Another guy that trains there, Anderson Silva, had a similar knockout recently and gave credit to Seagal. I had never saw a front kick knockout before the Silva fight, and what Machida did here is pretty much the same kind of strike. Crazy that all of a sudden the technique has become so devastating. Crazier still that Steven "Marked for Death" Seagal is the one noted for making it happen.

Here is a YouTube video of Seagal training Anderson Silva:

Love the 'nose locks' Seagal is teaching him. It's a wild world we live in.

Machida gave credit to Seagal too. And here's an interview with him after the fight.

I'm still baffled by this whole Seagal thing though. I was convinced Silva is just playing a prank on Seagal, but apparently they are serious. I don't get it.

Another chapter in the epic trolling-saga of pretending Seagal has anything to do with Black House's success.

Although, it takes balls to do that to Anderson Fucking Silva. :D
