STC: To Boldly Indiegogo

They're featuring the coin set at the moment, but not many are biting. If only there were more perks in that $400-1,000 range.

The original scripts seem all to be gone though. They are not even displayed greyed out as sold anymore - I guess someone just cleaned up and that means they were all sold?

Oops!

Just as we are hoping STC can find a way to juice interest Star Trek: Horizon has been contacted by CBS and politely asked not to proceed with their next project. And STH was planning on launching a Kickstarter drive this coming Saturday.

Let's hope this was based on his earlier involvement with Axanar, rather than something that's going to happen to all fan films. For appearances, though, it certainly looks bad.

Could this have something to do with the scale of the project? Promoting oneself as a feature film rather than a (relatively) small scale web series?

Maybe that plus they don't want to have new projects (even sequels) starting up during the lawsuit. And (I hope) the fact that Tommy Kraft worked on Prelude to Axanar.

If CBS were indeed intent on shutting down all fan productions then why not a C&D notification to all productions? NV and STC are two of the most prominent fan productions and CBS coild have put a real scare into people by asking them to shut down, and yet not a peep to either of those projects.

And they actually could have done it with STC before their Indiegogo started, but they didn't. So I'm going to assume all is normal with STC and NV until I hear otherwise.

It's possible C/P is hoping Fan Productions can read between the lines and get a clue so that C/P doesn't have to go to the expense of generating C&D letters to every single production that's out there. A few surgical shut downs might achieve their goal--without having to resort to carpetbombing.

For what it's worth, early plans on doing another crowdfunding campaign this year were canceled by us. We have no plans to do any in the immediate future.

Maybe it's a release what you have in the can and don't make any more. After all they didn't stop the release of the finished film Horizon.

It would be far simpler to just issue the C&D letters to everyone rather than this pick-and-choose approach. I doubt CBS would be worried about the cost of postage. At this point it looks like they're putting the kibosh on certain productions because of something they each individually did. In Axanar's case they're using a hammer because maybe AP's behaviour was the last straw, but in STH's case a polite notification is sufficient.

How many productions are out there?

It's easier to research all the productions, determine which ones are still active and which ones are languishing, and then locate the key contact individuals for those productions and then tell them to stop? That's easier than one (1)?

Perhaps they are allowing productions that are in-process to complete their productions before shutting them and future crowd funding down? It's possible that ep 7 may be the last for STC (I hope not!) since they are already in process and booked for their premiere dates.

It will be interesting to see if Renegades Requiem is allowed to complete their project since they are funded by production phase with obviously more crowdfunding planned.

STC has just released another video with Vic Mignogna making an impassioned pitch to fans in light of the CBS/Axanar legal drama in progress. He makes a distinct point to clarify STC is nothing like what Axanar has been accused of. There's no word of the Horizon C&D notification so this video was probably made before that news broke.

Yes it was a nice pitch and probably necessary to address the uncertainty surrounding the whole crowd funding. I had forgotten about STCs 501c which puts them in a different light than other fan productions (IMHO). I think anyone involved with Axanar will have to 'cool' it for awhile. Crowdfunding and having any relationship (past or present) with Axanar is going to get "their" attention.

Yes, the video was posted yesterday, so probably just hours before the Horizon news broke.

Is it proper to call it a C&D notification? I haven't seen what they sent him, but he describes it as more a friendly warning than anything formal.

While it mightn't have been a formal and official C&D notification it amounts to the same thing. Given the current climate all CBS had to do was offer a polite warning of possible action and the message is perfectly clear: stop and do not proceed with your planned project.

I find this all a bit strange. If it was the intent to shut all the fan productions down then why not make such "polite" phone calls to all of them or at least the major players and put a definite end to all activity? It's as if CBS is teating the fan productions (except Axanar) with kid gloves. It could be a clever type of move to assert themselves without coming across as bullies. Or, maybe, there is something else going on and only specific productions are being or going to be targeted.

It's all rather strange.

Maybe its just fan "movies" that have their attention for now.
