STC: To Boldly Indiegogo

I've been extremely wary of crowdfunding, as well, but STC has proven itself truthful and able to deliver on the goods to me. I donated to the Kirkstarter 2.0, and I'll do the same with the IndieGoGo campaign. YMMV, of course.

The issue, of course, is WHOM they are interfacing with at CBS. It;s a big corporation, and in such corporations the right hand frequently does know know what the left hand is doing.

That's true even within their legal office. Last year some new hire in CBS legal was telling YouTube to take down The White Iris while STC's contact was telling them to put it back up. (Turned out the new guy had mistaken it for an actual TOS episode.)

I think if they intended to shut everyone down it would have been apparent by now. All they had to do was dispatch C&D letters all around to get it started.

True, but they could have dispatched C&D letters before Axanar earned 1.1 million as well. You can't really rule anything out, that's all. I think anyone going back to the crowdfunding trough in a post-Axanar era is taking a risk. If CBS/Paramount are using Alec as a way to sort of say "enough is enough" to the others on raising, let's say, six figures and above, they're taking a calculated risk.

Considering the hot water Axanar is in STC must feel reasonably confident in going after a final big push to finance its last half dozen episodes.

Each STC episode costs about $50,000 (I believe). That means they need about $300,000 to cover the cost of those episodes. Will they have any stretch goals beyond that, say maybe $500,000?

If successful we're left to wonder if anything could come afterward, after those six episodes. While it's interesting to ponder the possibilities--such as a TMP like followup--that's an idea that would probably be a lot more expensive than doing TOS era stories in terms of sets and costumes and such.
I think it's costing more than 50k an episode. We shall see what the goals are for x number of episodes.

I'd rather see them go slightly back in time and do more episodes between 11 and 12 (12-13 being the finale). Or if this current campaign is hugely successful, maybe they'd extend the planned run to 14 or 15 episodes up front.

I hope so. 13 episodes is not enough!

In the past, I have not liked the way their rewards have skewed. If you are making some kind of video project, I should be able to see that project for something around the $25 mark, even if it's just a digital download. Sure, once the episode is posted on YouTube, I can always go there and grab the digital file, but a straight-from-the-creator download tends to be of somewhat higher quality. In past Kirkstarters, DVDs and/or downloads were held back to levels more like $50 and $75. I don't need cutesy ephemera like stickers and posters, I just want to see the show. This actually caused me to contribute less than I would have if I'd gotten a look at the show for a lower pledge. I assume they will be doing much the same with this campaign.

I never saw any stickers from STC. But it would be nice if the episodes were available at lower levels than $50 for download, $200 for DVD, and $300 for Blu-ray.

It's interesting that they are trying to fund the remaining episodes in one effort. I was originally thinking that they were trying to rush things through before the other shoe drops, perhaps because they heard some news about an eventual shutdown of crowd funded projects. But I also understand STC's point that there is a lot of overhead running these campaigns and a big chunk is paid out to Kickstarter and the perks.

I was also surprised to hear that completing the 5 year mission will only take 13 episodes. Once I understood that producing 6 more episodes will take at least 3 years, and year one of the mission has a single episode, then it makes more sense.

In fact, they had originally intended for last year's "Kirkstarter 2.0" to be their last fundraiser. (That was based on a representation that someone was going to make an enormous donation, which failed to happen in the end.)
