Status of the Series?

For the first few years, Netflix had a reputation for not cancelling their own series.

Unless CBS decides to abandon All Access, they probably won't be cancelling any of their series while they're still launching their system

That site seems like bullshit, they pretty much renewed the show after the debut. At worst, I imagine Netflix would just take the rights and go with it.
Netflix would just take the rights to Star Trek, as in all of it (or atleast CBS owned TV rights)? Depending who you ask Star Trek franchise is worth at-least couple billion dollars. Sorry, CBS is not "giving" it Netflix. Netflix my license it (like they currently do), but it will be CBS property for foreseeable future.
If CBS sees All Access as a failure, they will have couple choices in regards to STD. Either cancel it altogether or switch it to broadcast TV. I suppose syndication is still a thing too, but if they have two 15 episode seasons, that will be a hard sell.

I'm not sure about all of those numbers in the article about All Access. But either way CBS has a lot of options when it comes to Star Trek in general and Discovery.

Revenue models have changed a lot since TNG times where syndication was the revenue stream of old that has been replaced by paid services like CBS All Access, Showtime, Netflix.

Should All Access fail - which I seriously think they would give it 3-4 years to grow before deciding to pull the plug or not ... CBS has plenty of options.

#1 - Does it warrant a slot on network TV (CBS) - that's been a long time for Star Trek
#2 - Netflix - already a partner
#3 - have we forgotten Showtime - good exposure for them

CBS is not lacking ways to get Star Trek in front of us - CBS All Access or not.

The biggest concern I have is if the articles less then 1 million viewers per episode actually stands. I think even with being on a paid service they need to have more than 1 million viewers a week.

I'm saying Netflix could start putting it on Netflix US rather than buying it outright. Trek is already entirely on Netflix in many countries, including a few of the movies and all the TV.

Cbs would move it to showtime before they would give Netflix us rights. More money for cbs on aa or sho in the us.

Netflix has already said they are airing season 2 overseas so article is wrong on that.

From everything I've seen, season 2 is already paid for by Netflix.
The entire series is paid for by CBS! That they are recouping tnat cost by selling international streaming rights to Netflix doesn't change that.

Saying "paid for by Netflix" implies their money is a reason the show is made, that's not the case.

Distinction without a difference.

What I don't understand is why they need so long for S2. If it really is 2019 it will be a full year from now or more. S1 has been done filming for months and they knew they had a green light for s2 back in the fall. They don't plan to drop all eps at once so it is more than feasible to get a 13 episode season half through post production by September with the second half done by January. Have they not done a single thing in working towards s2 yet?

I read in an interview that each episode takes about 6 months total to do. It’s a long lead time.

Do not forget that viewership numbers likely do not include Netflix overseas, nor the pirated views. Talking All Access only.

Of course the show that is NOT available on broadcast TV will have fewer viewers. Duh.

Yeah but they film a whole bunch of them basically at once with the sets they have.

Right but from start to filming to being in the can in 6 months due to post production work. They still need pre-production before that. Yes once they start you'll have a new episode done every week to two weeks but if they started filming season 2 today it will be August before one episode was ready and you are unlikely to have a new one ready every week so you still need enough in the can before you can start airing.

The other scheduling problem is Game of Thrones in 2019. Viewers overlap so I don't think you want to compete with that. So maybe do first have of season Fed/Mar 2019 then take a break and come back after GoT. GoT is going to be interesting scheduling especially since a lot of people will re-subscribe to HBO Now for GoT and I don't think you want people to choose CBSAA or HBO.

Fewer viewers in the US, but when you add in worldwide especialy with many markets that haven't even had star trek airded there before it could be higher overall. We really don't know.

This article is a very interesting, albeit unsurprising read, assuming most of it's reasonably accurate, and I see no reason why it isn't.

I suspect that within a few months, STD will be offered to just about any channel that'll take it. And as for season 2, I don't know who's going to fund it. I've heard rumours Netflix have passed.

This new article makes it look like DSC is doing very well indeed: https://www.forbes.com/sites/ianmor...overy-is-an-unstoppable-monster/#5c3ded2d152e

Since Netflix doesn't publish numbers, it's hard to be sure, but all the "unofficial" numbers that I've seen have DSC as one of Netflix's most popular shows internationally. It's even ahead of big hits like Stranger Things in many countries.

All of this leads me to think that as long as they're not giving up on CBSAA altogether, CBS is very unlikely to cancel DSC any time soon.

CBS will cancel DSC when it no longer generates sufficient revenue (direct or indirect) to suit their expectations OR if some sort of catastrophic scandal derails it. Not really a mystery.

If it is doing as well as it seems to be doing on Netflix, not a chance. Why would they mothball Trek again instead of selling it to Netflix?

US rights will not go to Netflix. CBS would make far less money then they would on CBSAA or SHO.
