Spoilers Starship Design in Star Trek: Picard

Most of the ship and class names in DSC Season 1 came from John Eaves, he’s very fond of naming things after pilots and astronauts.

Which was quite annoying. Even during the TOS era when all the Connies had Earth-centric names, there should still have been way more diversity that just naming 99% of all the Discoverse fleet after human aviators.

What is this supposed to mean?

He was making a humorous observation, which might have gone over your head.

Terry really liked the Shangri-La.

As well he should. It’s a great design for the TMP era, just like the original Stargazer was.

Doug Drexler had drawn up a 3-view schematic. I expect he'll be posting those within the next few weeks.
@IRW Bloodwing
Doug has said he is sitting on a Treasure Trove of stuff, but is waiting till after the show premieres, I guess similar to Season 2 when they dropped stuff on the Stargazer and other ships of the fleet.

Untill then, plenty of pictures of the Shangri La out on the Internet, even some Ortho's

And I would pay handsomely for that.

What was the original Titan's dedication plaque quote in the novels, anyone remember? I'm almost certain there was a scene in the first book, but I don't have it on hand.

According to Memory Alpha:
In the non-canon Star Trek: Titan premier novel Taking Wing, Captain Riker has a tough time selecting a proper quote for the USS Titan's dedication plaque. It has never been implied, one way or the other, if it is standard procedure for a ship's captain to choose the quote on their own ship's plaque. In the next novel The Red King, he chooses the Vulcan maxim "Infinite Diversity in Infinite Combinations" (IDIC) in tribute to the Titan's crew, which following with the Luna-class's design, was one of the most diverse in Starfleet history with less than 15% of the crew being Human. One of Riker's other choices was a verse sung by Jazz legend Teresa Brewer: "It Don't Mean a Thing If It Ain't Got That Swing."

The problem with naming the ships is the fine line between callbacks and new stuff. And that problems starts with us, the fans. (I hate that word.....)

People here are calling for both new ships and names, and there are people calling for the Titan that was part of the novels. TPTB are trying to come up with something that can please both people. Sometimes that works (I think the Stargazer did). Sometimes it doesn't. (I love the desing of the new Titan, but yeah, naming it so....)

Personally, I'm curious if there will be a comment from Riker about his Titan and what happened. Little throw away line or something.

If they were really that concerned about the fans wanting the Titan from the novels, they could have easily made the ship the Luna class. But that wasn't what they were concerned about.

And quite frankly, I'm still a bit bewildered as well as to why this ship needed to be the Titan at all. Other than it being the namesake of Riker's old ship, there's little need for it to have had that name.

Thats about it.
