The trouble with the Ross is that even if you tried to fix it you'd just end up turning it back into a Galaxy again.
The Ross is the ugliest ship in that armada.
Sorry, the new stargazzer isn't a refit of Picard old ship. There's nothing hinting at that:
1. It's a lot bigger, and except 4 nacelles looks nothing like a constellation.
2. New class name.
3. New NCC # .. If it was a refit it would retain its #
And yes.. The ross is ugly..but so is the new stargazzer to me.. The attachment for the nacelle are butt ugly.

One of the ugliest since in the 24th/25th century and that is saying something!
It doesn't, the 8 is just a bit of space dust that got stuck to the hull.
I'm pretty sure that the folks who actually designed and put the ship into the episode are probably the best and most accurate sources for what it actually is and how it's been designated.
Just because one doesn't happen to like their interpretation of Their design, doesn't mean they're wrong and you are right.
Of course, as we have recently seen around here, one's personal choice apparently trumps any actual facts.

Dave Blass claims the Stargazer is the third ship to bear that name. So, not a refit.

We also see 3 gold models in the ready room to support that.

It just doesn't need to exist. Would have been more fun to just have a Galaxy or even an Ambassador class. It looks like it's from that era anyway and as a ship provides the same function
I'm on Team Not-A-Refit, but I have to point out that the Enterprise refit has a picture of the TOS ship on its wall of previous Enterprises, so the Stargazer could have two different gold models of itself.
