Spoilers Starship Design in Star Trek: Picard

Meh, I'll take Galaxy-X over this thing everyday, and twice on Sunday.
I did like the Galaxy X, the third nacelle made use of all that wasted space between the nacelles.

If not a nacelle then it should be a fighter bay or docking port for a Defiant class vessel.

I always thought the Galaxy-X was more or less a fanboy/childish OMG SUPER GALAXY WITH THE ULTRA PHASER! design.

It was like a cheap, stupid way of highlighting just how advanced tech had gotten in the AGT timeline. The Enterprise has a ultra death phaser, can cloak and goes to Warp 13 and defeats two Klingon attack cruisers with ease where the old Enterprise was seen as a 1:1 match for a VorCha class.

No, it is absolutely horrible, the third nacelle completely ruins the organic flow of the ship.
I prioritise function over form.

An extra nacelle will extend cruise speed/time and provide an extra nacelle in case of battle damage, something should be there as its a lot of wasted space even if its just an extra shuttle-bay or docks for a couple of runabouts.

The Galaxy class could be a solid design platform and adding value of some kind between the nacelles is a good start as it will keep the design relevant for longer.

I just liked the FJ Dreanought so much, I couldn't dislike the Galaxy version of it.

Then there's the canon mega-phaser-cannon.

What about putting the casino there?

In actuality the Galaxy X was an homage to the old TOS Technical manuals that had a Dreadnought variant of the TOS Connie with a third nacelle..

Edit: Sniped by Pharazon

Though, to be fair, the FJ DN had the third nacelle attached to the saucer, which might allow that part warp speed after a separation.

That would work but it would have to be on top and angled backwards over the engineering hull.

Basically if it separates you get a TNG stardrive /battle section and a Kelvin.

No impulse drive on the secondary hull. The theoretical separation of TOS era ships was only for emergencies.

At least until Phase II or POTT, whichever one of those was meant to land the saucer on planets.

Yeah that would be fine for the Galaxy class, plus there would still be all that space between the rear nacelles.

Big Shuttlebay
2 Runabout docks like on DS9
Defiant class cradle
Weapon mounts
Or even just another impulse engine to increase sublight speeds.

At that point you would just have a galaxy with the payload pod of a Nebula

Or then it shows how Starfleet will have to resort to desperation measures to keep an aging warhorse apace with the competition, bolting extra stuff onto her until she groans under the burden. Pretty much what happens to all warships everywhere, although nowadays they don't always capsize under the extra weight.

The D was a has-been in the "AGT..." future, and it showed nicely. Just like with Riker...

Not if its integrated into the engineering hull like the Shuttlebay on the Discovery.

It would be a permanent addition and the platform could easily handle it.

Best would be some more impulse engines and a shuttlebay or runabout docks above, wouldnt take up much room height wise either.

Frankly, that is stupid approach to fictional tech. It can look good and function well, because how it functions is completely made up. If you want more engine power you can just say the ship has upgraded warp coils instead of adding a hideous third engine. And the 'wasted space' between the engines may not be wasted, as it might be critical to warp field dynamics or whatever.
