Stargate: Atlantis - The Complete Series on Blu-Ray in July

About time they released this. I'm not sure it's worth the upgrade, however, since I own all five seasons on DVD already. It's certainly not my favorite series (pretty iffy after season one). I'll pass unless it goes on sale.

There's something to be said about seeing the series in HD. On the other hand, I was never blown away by the look of it, so DVD/Netflix will probably be fine for most viewers.

I don't own any of the seasons on DVD, so I'll get this. They need to release SG-1 on blu-ray too.

I already own all 5 seasons on DVD, and I was really disappointed by how the show ended, so I don't know if it's worth the upgrade right now.

I think that might present more of a problem. I'm fairly positive (though would be happy to be proven wrong) that the early season of Stargate SG-1 haven't been mastered in HD. I've certainly never seen them broadcast in HD (whereas I see SGA shown like that all the time).

Pretty certain you're right. It would have only been season 8 or 9 onwards that they went HD. Releasing SG-1 in HD would present the same problems as releasing TNG in HD.

It was season 8, when Atlantis started. Shame really, as it looks awful compared to 35mm film. Well, the ones they used did anyway, they forked out a bit more money for the ones they used for SGU though thank fuck.

Thanks, I thought so.
I'd say that digital video quality has probably improved a lot since they started using it too, even in this short time span. It's a new and quickly developing technology.
It doesn't look too bad on DVD (mostly), although it is going to show up on Bluray once you get full resolution and full contrast colour.

I don't know about HD, but I am pretty sure that the entire series was shot in widescreen.

All 10 seasons of SG-1 are available on DVD in 16:9 format SD - in region 2 at least. Seasons 8-10 are available in HD on iTunes. As "Children of the Gods" wasn't released on Blu-ray as a test case, TPTB either can't go that route because it's not possible (no HD master tapes or film), or it's too expensive and they don't think there is a market. I suspect the former is the case.

They definitely have the master tapes, as in the commentary they mention rescanning the film, and cropping it differently, and using different takes that were restored.
I think it was a matter of doing it on the cheap, because I think a lot of the effects shots were left as is, which means it was probably only edited in SD.

Ok, I haven't see the re-edited version of "Children of the Gods" as I heard it wasn't worth the money. Seems like TPTB are cheapskates then.

Looks like won't be getting anything more after Brad Wright said MGM have cancelled any plans for any SG movies of any kind. Basically looks like the franchise is now 100% dead

the DVD movie made profits and they still cancel more.

The straight-to-DVD market has bottomed out, though. Continuum made notably less money than The Ark of Truth, according to Wikipedia. There it states that the first DVD movie grossed about $13 million; the second grossed $8 million. Both films were produced for $7 million apiece.

There's just not a strong market for an additional Stargate feature right now. Add to that the poor performance of Stargate Universe on television and it's easy to see why MGM doesn't have particular confidence in the franchise. It's much easier to re-release catalogue material that doesn't require much investment (which is why we see a Blu-Ray of Stargate Atlantis and not Stargate SG-1, despite the earlier series being more popular) than to produce new content.

How much did it cost you to get all 5 seasons. I tried looking but each season is up to 50$.
