No, you're not. I've avoided saying the class of ship is different from the type of ship. For example, the USS Nimitz, is the first ship in the Nimitz class, and the type of ship was an Aircraft Carrier (CVN). If they were to name and type ships consistent to the way it has been done in the past up to present time, then If the Athena is the first in its class, then it would be an Athena class ship, it would probably be a ship type as some kind of Starfleet Academy Training Auxiliary vessel. Most sci-fi writers don't go that deep into ship class (naming) versus type Nerdology.
Also, nothing requires Starfleet Command to adhere to ship naming and type a thousand years from now.

I mean, we can make a guess it isn't a new ship on the grounds it seems to have NCC markers NX so it's far enough along it isn't a prototype anymore, so maybe an older spaceframe repurposed and overhauled?
I once brought up the first ship = name of class vis a vis the Vesta Class, and was told I was making a vast assumption.
It's probably an Academy class ship.
And still does given his ability to transport Burnham into the White Room from any point in the galaxy.
The assumption holds for both TOS and TNG. The TOS Enterprise was a Constitution class, named for the USS Constitution, the first in the class of a heavy cruiser. The TNG Enterprise was a Galaxy class, named for the USS Galaxy, the first in the class that was destroyed in a fight with the Dominion. That takes us up to the 24th century, where the first ship of a design, becomes the name for the ship class for all the future ships with the same design. That doesn't keep Starfleet from changing their ship / class naming methods by the time they get to the 3rd millennia.
Sorry, but what on earth are you talking about here? The USS Galaxy was not destroyed fighting the Dominion, the USS Odyssey was. The Galaxy took heavy damage at the Battle of Chin'Toka which was depicted on screen. However it was not destroyed, and was present at the Battle of Cardassia and in Star Trek: Nemesis, is listed among the ships in Battle Group Omega waiting to intercept the Scimitar
