Spoilers Starfleet Academy General Discussion Thread

The SNW crossover was entirely Mike's doing.

And Prodigy was using existing digital assets to save money, same with the Whales.

Deep breath, Campe. Deep. Breath.

Okay.

First, any crossover is going to have to have input from not only the showrunner from the other show, but also the production company(s). They have to have permission. If Kurtzman didn’t want to have their (at the time) flagship show tainted with some lousy animated series (it’s not, BTW), it would never have happened, even if Mike had interest in doing it.

Also, I’m talking about Sam’s conversation with the Doctor, mentioning Dal, Murph and Captain Gwyn not the digital assets. That line and the Doctor’s reaction is a story yet to be told. If Kurtzman didn’t care, he wouldn’t have let that happen. And he directed the GD episode!

Okay. Back to breathing.

I'm willing to give the creatives the benefit of the doubt on that one. There's clearly more going on with the Betazoids than we've been shown and a lot can happen in 800 years.
If they get to explaining that, then yeah, I'll be fine with it. But if it isn't by the end of series, it'll clearly be a case of them dropping the ball massively on an established species from the classic era.

Which is equally ridiculous, yes. There’s a lot to criticize over how Rick Berman handled some elements of Trek during his tenure, but at the same time he was still the guy at the top calling the shots, being responsible for some of the most classic episodes of Trek ever produced. Some people are just able to view this stuff in black and white.

One of my favorite anecdotes to show Berman isn't 100% bad is that he ran interference when the network wanted to add a "boy band" who would play in the mess hall during every episode of Enterprise.

Personally I just thought Picard season three was incredibly dull, stupid, uninteresting and — worst of all — boring. I can honestly say that I have never found watching any season of Trek as tedious as this one. I already hated season two, but in hindsight, with a few years gone by and with the dreadfulness of that third season, it might actually have been the superior season, because it had more interesting ideas. Season three managed that I actively didn’t want to see any more of the original The Next Generation crew.

I enjoyed all of the episodes save one in the moment. But the thing I hated about Picard Season 3 is it undermined essentially everything from the first two seasons for the sake of cheap nostalgia hits.
  • Data's (second) death in Season 1 is undermined by the weird resurrection in Season 3.
  • Q's "death" in Season 2 is undermined via the postcredit scene.
  • Picard's entire Season 2 arc about being open to a relationship with Laris is undone, with him ditching her pretty much immediately, and the show not making it clear if he went back to her or got together with Beverly.
  • Seven's decision to not join Starfleet (which was an interesting turn) is undone.
  • Seven and Raffi break up (for the second time!) offscreen.
  • The motley crew that Picard built up over the first two seasons is entirely ditched save for Raffi.
  • The whole "peaceful Borg" thing Season 2 floats is rendered irrelevant by going back to the well with the Borg Queen again.
  • The season actively lampshades the peace that Riker and Troi had found with their daughter, intimating that Will was always miserable.
The only thing that actually was paid off from the earlier seasons is Raffi reconciling with her son and getting to see her grandchild. Literally nothing else remains of the show that once was.

You just know that Matalas had this idea laying on his shelf for like a decade, and hammered it awkwardly into continuity.

I simply don't believe Berman wasn't paying attention to something that cost in the range of three million dollars an episode that was going out the door with his name on it. Just like I don't believe Kurtzman isn't paying attention to any of the shows on his watch.

Berman ordered Terry Farrell to wear a padded bra, because he thought her boobs were too small. That doesn't scream "hands off" to me.

He's paying attention to the live action shows, certainly.

But the animated one's were given free reign to do what they wanted. Which is a very standard Hollywood disconnect with higher ups not considering "animation" worthwhile.

Animation is much cheaper to produce, so a lot less is riding on whether it gets good ratings.

While CBS Trek isn't exactly my speed, I also don't think the vast majority of it is poorly made, just dull and too overdependent on what came before.

Looking at it critically, the poorly made stuff was Section: 31 and Discovery's Mirror Universe arc. Of what I have seen.

Directed, yes. Wrote, no.

But they should have gotten the Betazoids' black eyes and them being telepaths right.
Ah ok

I was going to mention the black irises. I cannot believe they missed that. I just finished the episodeast night. Deanna was an empath because she was only half betazoid. But her mom was telepathic and could read minds because she was full betazoid. The whole episode was poorly written. Its like the person who wrote it never watched an episide of tng. A shame the new show stinks so badly. Also how many "Bros" did we hear at the end. Lol. Yeah 1100 years from now young people will still be talking the same way saying "bro". Lol Good news is the show has only hot the top 10 very few times. Hopefully that will last. Lol

Data was an Android, both of them made perfect sense.
Q's "death" in Season 2 is undermined via the postcredit scene.
Only if you don't understand Q.
Seven's decision to not join Starfleet (which was an interesting turn) is undone.
Seven had a life changing experience that lead to her realizing she wanted more in life then just being lone wolf girl.

Berman essentially left Ira to run the show. He vetoed some decisions on a occasion but those were rare. Berman's influence on the creative direction/ storylines was minimal by the time Ira took over. He was hands-off at that juncture. This is not up for debate and has been well documented.

My two cents: I love this show. I am 50 and far from the target audience. I like the kids. I wasnt sure I would like them but they are well written and well acted. I hope this show sticks around. That will be hard with the hate and the more Conservative leaders now in charge of Paramount. They don't represent the values of Star Trek.

As for the haters: Grow up, you are losers, and F you!

Most of it I would say is good. But I think people are wanting something that feels special. They don't just want to sort of like the Trek show they are watching. They want it to be in the running as their most favorite show on tv. Part of that is because of the golden age of tv post Sopranos that made everyone have higher expectations for the shows they watch.
