News Starfleet Academy Coming to P+

I think at this point with the sheer number of Star Trek shows and movies that exist, an AI programmed with ALL of them (and maybe even throw in the New Voyages scripts for good measure) and designed specifically to write Star Trek scripts probably could come up with something decent now.

Honestly with the ongoing WGA strike, Paramount losses as detailed at Paramount Streaming Subscribers, Losses Grow in First Quarter – The Hollywood Reporter , AND the possibility of actors/directors strikes at the end of June, when all is said and done I'd honestly just up and cancel the Starfleet Academy show and greenlight Star Trek Legacy. We all know things in the film business are in huge upheaval now. I'm probably the fiercest critic of Picard Season 3 there is, feeling it overly relies on nostalgia, cliches and tired plots but in the end that was bringing in the viewers and if I were Kurtzman or a Paramount executive I'd squash Academy and, if there must be another live action Trek alongside Strange New Worlds, greenlight Legacy immediately.
Let me get this straight:

Your strategy for a company that is trying to cut/recoup costs is to cancel the new show they just Green lit that allows them to use and continue to amortize sets and props built around their 32nd century setting; and also allows them to keep Talent costs low because all the actors except for maybe one or two will most likely be new or unknown; for a series that would require them to rebuild sets from scratch (all the Picard sets were in a studio in LA, not to mention that shooting the series in LA really inflated the budget as well), and will probably face larger Talent costs as they will be paying more for a number of the Legacy actors the audience will expect to be doing cameos each season.

Yeah I'm sure that would go over well with the Paramount bean counters. Not to mention the fact that your Legacy series would probably not recapture the buzz or audience interest that PICARD S3 received because said buzz and interest was due to the fact that they got all the original TNG main ensemble cast to reprise their characters for one final send-off.

Now do I think in a few years if Paramount+ continues with streaming new Star Trek that they might eventually consider the Legacy series, or a Legacy film series? Sure. But anyone who understands what the draw of Picard S3 was, also understands that a legacy series with just Jeri Ryan and a couple of other characters from the Picard S3 will just not generate that level of Interest again.

[Edited to to add/fix:
FYI - Fixed this post to contain the actual post/person I meant to reply to. I didn't realize I actually hit quote on the wrong post originally.]

Are you responding to the intended poster?

gutting a tv show that no one's interested in
You have solid data to back this up? Irate YouTubers and (some) online vitriol is NOT data. Also, that some might prefer a “Legacy” show over the SFA concept is NOT sufficient to conclude “no one is interested” in the latter. And if we’re going to rely on anecdotal information, then I am interested in both ideas (albeit in reverse order from the YouTubers).

Agreed. The 32nd century needs more world building and I'm down for it. Also, more Tilly? I'm down for it. More Admiral Vance? I'm down for it. More Dr Kovich? I'm down for it. You know who would make a great instructor at an Academy? Jett Reno. I'd be down for that.

Bring it on.

I don't but I definitely don't recall anyone asking for such a show before it was announced. That's it. I'd rather not have my offhand comment distorted beyond all context however I think it can be widely agreed that no one really expected it coming the way, say, people did for Strange New Worlds.

Gene Roddenberry Himself once said Star Trek would be shit if it only catered to what the Fans wanted. And after seeing Picard S3, I can't say he's wrong.

Nostalgia and fanwank can only carry the franchise so far. It needs to expand and grow if there's any hope of the franchise enduring. An Academy series will help with said expansion and growth. Legacy may be a hit among RMB and other angry YouTubers, but it will eventually lead to the franchise's stagnation, not growth. Star Trek needs to be a tree, not an ouroboros.

In literally any other situation I would agree. I was Picard Season 3's biggest critic. You can check my post history if you don't believe me. If Trek were owned by Amazon or Apple who have money to kill on taking risks, I'd say go for the unknown, where no Trek has gone before.

But the reality is Paramount is bleeding money, all the articles and stats confirm it: Paramount Streaming Subscribers, Losses Grow in First Quarter – The Hollywood Reporter . The loss of half a billion dollars, as the article claims, is no joke. We have a full blown writers strike right now. An actors' strike and directors' strike may be next. Even if those end, the reality is Paramount will have to make some hard decisions. Until the situation changes (and really it's hard to see how short of Netflix or Apple or Amazon buying Trek) it's best to play it safe.

I think people were speculating about the show when the Tilly and the cadets episode dropped.
I can't think of a single Berman era show I or anyone else "asked for."
