News Starfleet Academy Coming to P+

We don't know that it'll actually be in San Francisco. Indeed, 32nd century Starfleet Academy could be at a new space-based facility, which could provide a plausible means to have the cadets in space every week while also doing their studies.

Also, we did see 32nd century San Francisco briefly in Disco S3.

Make me remember an old Japanese anime, called Mugen No Ryvius.
A Starfleet academy type of story that has become my favorite anime for years. Just imagine, when the space station where the new Starfleet Academy meet a catastrophic accident, and all the instructors were dead. The cadets then have to save their own live with their limited knowledge, until they find a dormant starship inside the station; Ryvius.

But even Ryvius can't save them (the cadets) from themselves.

As a nearly middle aged white man I have to ask when did diversity become bad? Did I miss a meeting? I thought diversity was a good thing and was taught from my white parents, and grew up with multiple nationalities in various professions. Sorry, but I wasn't aware that this was a quality of becoming middle age and white, and really should have been consulted before this app was installed...

;)
In a sense attributing this to middle aged white men is a form of bigoted stereotyping, but in reality adult white males in the US tend to be the ones holding and spreading these views. I am middle aged and white and I have a hard time with people that look like me because so many of them disappoint me when they let hateful stuff slip out.

It is baffling that the right wing a-holes have turned the idea of diversity and inclusion into some deep dark threat to stupid, angry, white men but there is no question that is has. The term "woke" which just means being aware of differences in people, how different people have been treated by society on average, and how for some of them, those treatments have been negative on average; is now offensive to these people. These a-holes then go out and act out and are vocally discriminatory. To them Disco sucks because it is woke and includes a Black Woman captain, a gay male couple, and a Trans couple. They complain about that, but idiotically pretend that it is the writing they are talking about when they cry woke. This RMB clown did the same exact thing. He called it out for being woke ( recognizing diversity) then tried to claim he was only talking about the quality of writing. Bullshit. He is a bigot whining about having people of backgrounds he hates in the show. I like to think that deep down, these people realize they are bigots and are partly responsible for the negative biases in society, but being stupid and angry they simply lash out at it and try to ridicule those who simply accept facts. Do black people get paid less, on average, than white people in the same field? When controlled for education levels and geographic location in the US, the answer is yes, they got paid 14.9% less in 2019 compared to 8.6% less in 1979. So yes there is a large disparity in how the US labor market treats black people and that disparity has gotten worse in the last 40 years. That data is woke.

Kurtzman was brought in by CBS at the time to fix Fuller's mess and get Discovery back on budget and staying there, so he didn't actually approve anything. This is why so many visual changes were walked back in season 2.

I didn't realize that, I wonder how much shit Kurtzman's been blamed for that was actually Brian Fuller's fault.

Folks accuse Discovery of being woke, which I don't agree with, but I believe that feeling was triggered by Brian Fuller treating the cast of the show like a Idenity check lists in interviews which othered his cast so much, when it should never have been treated as a big deal.

Canadians can write if the WGA strike happens. STARGATE ATLANTIS was able to during the last strike because only one of their writers, Carl Binder, was a member of the WGA at that time.

Unless the rules have changed since then.

Gene Roddenberry described what woke was and declared Star Trek to be woke before woke was a thing.

"Star Trek was an attempt to say that humanity will reach maturity and wisdom on the day that it begins to not just tolerate, but take special delight in differences in ideas and differences in life forms."

People like RMB will never understand this.

Not every show which films in Canada is staffed by Canadian writers. For example, during the last strike, BSG, despite also filming in Canada had to suspend production because its entire writing staff were with the WGA.

It'll depend on whether the Star Trek shows have enough or any Canadian writers on their staffs to continue if there is a WGA strike.

I'm aware of that. I was just using SGA as an example of a series that was able to get around that.

I am not certain, but SMALLVILLE might also have had a similar scenario where most of the writing staff was Canadian. Season 7 had 20 episodes, and they normally did 22 per year, and that was when the strike occured. Granted, they lost 2 episodes, but given how most shows lost even more that season (SUPERNATURAL, for example, was 6 episodes short for season 3), I do wonder if their writing staff was more Canadian heavy.

Gene was progressive, not woke, very big difference.

From this leftwinger perpective wokeness (and I'm very careful in how I use that term, its too often abused), its elitist, it over uses academic language and talks down to those who don't have post secondary educations, its often filled with heavily rationalized double standards, is filled with back stabbing narrassists who usually end up in positions of influence, treats poor whites like shit, ignores mens issues, engages in paternalistic racism against minorities, encourages eating disorders (fat pride), engages in approaches to race & sex issues in a way shown to cause sever physcological harm and has been call anti CLB (CLB being highly successful form of therapy), it uses proto-fascist methods, from censorship to blending corporate & governmental organizations to control peoples lives, is a complete failure on every level at theor stated purphose of creating equality and tolerence and in fact often has the opposite effect, acts as an effective distraction that allows corporations and the 1% to continur screwing the working class, keeping people more divided then at any other time in my life, and I could continue. Oh and they have no idea how to normalize anything, they are too ego driven for that.

Picard Season 3 had no less then 5 major black characters, 2 bisexual woman, and a minor Asian character no one complained, why because Terry Matalas was chill about it, he acted like it was normal so it was, no one made it a big deal. Brian Fuller on the other hand before he got fired spent his time patting himself on the back and sounding like he was reading from a check list of minorities in interviews which othered the cast and made it seem woke (Discovery isn't woke IMHO, its just diverse).

I know the head writer of SFA is Toronto based, so I think at least some will be Canadian. Honestly I don't think the whole writers room has been hired yet, so the looming threat of the strike could push Kurtzman to hire an all Canadian writing staff. I mean Kurtzman does seem to prefer hiring Canadians for supporting roles, its more affordible.

This Academy series is more obvious than a giraffe in dark sunglasses sneaking into a Polar Bears Only club. It's 32nd century.

Not anything to get too excited about, but this tweet about Tawny Newsome on the picket lines in the WGA strike says "32nd century represent" which could be another indication the Academy series is indeed the 32nd century.
Honestly with the ongoing WGA strike, Paramount losses as detailed at Paramount Streaming Subscribers, Losses Grow in First Quarter – The Hollywood Reporter , AND the possibility of actors/directors strikes at the end of June, when all is said and done I'd honestly just up and cancel the Starfleet Academy show and greenlight Star Trek Legacy. We all know things in the film business are in huge upheaval now. I'm probably the fiercest critic of Picard Season 3 there is, feeling it overly relies on nostalgia, cliches and tired plots but in the end that was bringing in the viewers and if I were Kurtzman or a Paramount executive I'd squash Academy and, if there must be another live action Trek alongside Strange New Worlds, greenlight Legacy immediately.

That brings up a question... if the strikes go on long enough, would the studios simply have an AI write scripts?

They aren't WGA members. Hell, an AI isn't even human. So the rules may not apply to scripts written by one.

So cancel one show they can't write because of strikes for another show they can't write because of strikes??

Or is it, since Legacy is 100% based on old stuff an AI could write it?
My point was when all this is over (I assume it will be at some point, but you never know) everyone's going to have to make hard choices and gutting a tv show that no one's interested in probably wouldn't be the hardest in a list of hard choices.

I am interested in Starfleet Academy. Plus the point of it is to bring in new fans, rather than appease the ever-dwindling hard-core NCC LCARS Picard season 3 people.
