News Starfleet Academy Coming to P+

Many people forget that the Federation fell on very hard times after The Burn, so it's very likely Starfleet had a period of a more military, wild west mentality to the galaxy. (Rayner is a perfect example of this.)

I have always felt Starfleet was a military force by training, but it wasn't their main goal. Even our own military is not entirely militaristic... Army Corps of Engineers, relief missions, National Guard during and after emergencies like hurricanes, etc.

I have a lot of issues with this upcoming show, but having a War College definitely isn't one of them. In fact, I like the idea and I feel it's more realistic... particularly since this is going to be the first opening of the Academy in a century.

And there have been mentions of certain tactics being studied at the Academy over time (one being Kirk saying Korrd's strategies were required reading)

No issues with a War College from me, either. My anxiety comes from what was just experienced with Section 31 and if this will at all be good.

I'm confused by the confusion on this. Starfleet has been fighting wars since the 2150s. We know that cadets study the tactics of Garth of Izar and Jean-Luc Picard. Of course there is dedicated military training in Starfleet.
I take it you're unaware of the infamous "is Starfleet a military?" debates which have embroiled fandom for decades, which Trek BBS has seen more than a few of over the years. As someone who has taken part in my share of those debates, I can say they get heated with both sides rather passionately (some may say too passionately) making their arguments. What you're interpreting as confusion in this thread are in fact tongue in cheek references to these debates, which are referred to by some collectively as "The Argument."

"Ships go pew-pew-pew-boom-boom-boom!"
"And it always is due to this weird-ass alien James T. Kirk's Enterprise encountered that stirs shit up for its kicks."
"Class dismissed."

But is the military paid?

Maybe Starfleet Academy will suck. I have no clue.

SNW is made by many of the same people who made DSC and the two shows are on opposite ends of my rankings of the streaming era Trek shows. Joel Schumacher made the two campiest Batman films since 1966 yet also directed Falling Down, one of the most devastating cinematic character studies of the postwar American psyche in my lifetime. Sometimes the same people can make you roll your eyes and click off the channel and then blow your mind with the depth and complexity of their next project.

ALEX KURTZMAN: "My thinking was, if we set “Starfleet Academy” in the halcyon days of the Federation where everything was fine, it’s not going to speak to what kids are going through right now.

It’ll be a nice fantasy, but it’s not really going to be authentic. What’ll be authentic is to set it in the timeline where this is the first class back after over 100 years, and they are coming into a world that is only beginning to recover from a cataclysm — which was the Burn, as established on “Star Trek: Discovery,” where the Federation was greatly diminished.

So they’re the first who’ll inherit, who’ll re-inherit, the task of exploration as a primary goal, because there just wasn’t room for that during the Burn — everybody was playing defense. It’s an incredibly optimistic show, an incredibly fun show; it’s a very funny show, and it’s a very emotional show. I think these kids, in different ways, are going to represent what a lot of kids are feeling now.

Please remember the same brains behind Section 31 designed that abomination to bring in these same kids and youthful audience. They're following the same philosophy of appealing to an audience that doesn't exist - the same mistake they have made multiple times already. Star Trek was wildly popular back in the 80s and 90s - things were not exactly rosey then, especially in the UK - yet the message that things could be different and humans better resonated for decades and decades.
