Starcraft 2 Discussion

Rii

Rear Admiral
So here we go again. This thread, unlike the other 'Starcraft 2' thread, is for discussing Starcraft II.

I just failed a campaign mission for the first time: the train heist level. I wasn't prepared for the whole 'fine, we'll just invade you' thing. And fuck Firebats. :lol:

My SC2 character name/code is Rii (769) if anyone wants to add me. I won't be hitting up multiplayer until I'm done with the campaign though, and I'm trying to limit myself to 2-3 missions a day there. Don't want it to be over too quickly.

Good point; Australia is in South-East Asia for SC2 purposes. Oh well; playing against Koreans should be ... fun. :lol:

I just cleared the 'Haven' mission, choosing to side with Dr. Hanson against the Protoss. I didn't know that the campaign was going to offer choices like that, so it came as a welcome surprise.

I wish you were able to restructure an Armory 'build'. There are a few choices I probably would've made differently knowing about some of the upcoming research possibilities, i.e. Perdition Turrets.

I haven't followed anything SC2 apart from a video here and there so was pleasantly surprised by the whole makeup. It's much greater in scope than SC1 (D'oh.. it's 2010! ;)) and has far bigger possibilities.

I also like that the system requirements are comparatively low yet it looks good enough proving that it's about the game and not the graphics.

Is it true that there will be "add ons" that are more like full games coming, i.e. full campaigns for Zerg and Protoss also at full game price (heard it from a colleague of mine)?

Yes, it's true. At present when you buy the game you get a full single player Terran campaign, some bonus Protoss missions and the full multiplayer experience. The single player campaigns for the Zerg will come (probably/hopefully) next year and the Protess one after that. No idea what the price will be for those, hopefully they'll be a bit lower in price.

I think it depends on whether or not it drastically changes the multiplayer. If they independently patch the multi so that someone can just buy the first game and still play 3 years from now, they would have a hard time selling what amounts to a 60 dollar expansion pack... twice.

Then again, I guess that is how much the WoW expansions costs, right?

I believe WoW expansions generally cost ~$40 on release? I think it's more likely that the additional SC2 campaigns will be in line with that as opposed to being full retail.

I wouldn't read too much into it, but I notice in various interviews that the devs are pretty consistent in referring to the future releases as 'expansions', in contrast to the official company line implying (or at least not denying) that the three are on equal footing.

I think Joystiq put it well: the game feels timeless. It's something you should be able to come back to five years from now without thinking "man, this is what we used to consider to be good graphics?" :lol:

Activision-Blizzard is probably trying to not rule out full priced packs. And why shouldn't they? They're going to sell either way :lol:

So, aside from the multiplayer option, would it be accurate to say that you can't directly play as the Protoss or Zerg yet (at least campaign wise)? I have to say if that's the case, I'm a little disappointed. :( The game looks great, I just don't want to have to pay extra to get the full experience when everything was bundled together so well in the original.

When word came down that this was happening, it was said that there was so much content in the works that they needed to split it up.

I think its cause they wanted more money but I have no evidence to back up my gut feeling ;)

Apparently, there is a overheating bug with the game, but it's easily fixed. I stole this from gamefaqs.

The following information was taken from: http://gameinformer.com/b/news/arch...rd-confirms-starcraft-ii-overheating-bug.aspx

"Anyone else have StarCraft II try to melt their hardware? Blizzard admits that it's a known issue and has a fix for you.

Apparently, the game's menu screens aren't framerate-limited. This means that when there's nothing else going on, your graphics hardware renders the bejeezus out of those screens, causing nasty overheating problems. The fix is easy, requiring players to add the following lines to your "Documents\StarCraft II\variables.txt" file:

frameratecapglue=30
frameratecap=60

Good to know. Personally I would have appreciated a heads-up before my video card fried, but maybe this can save someone else from the hassle I've been dealing with since yesterday afternoon."

Keep Bumped.

RPS has a predictably entertaining roundtable on the game up:

Alec: There is absolutely no sense that this is just a third of a game. Definitely more akin to, say, the Lord of the Rings movies. The first massive part of a ludicrously massive saga.

If anyone wants to add me, I'm Tomathan (860). I'm on the US servers, but I thought I had read somewhere that they were going to eventually patch things up so everyone can play with each other. I will try to refind that article.

I picked this up less out of a love for the original Starcraft and more out of a love for RTS. The original Starcraft left a bad taste in my mouth (I know that harder AI are simply AI's that cheat more, but that was a ridiculous amount of cheating!!!), but 12 years had passed and I am willing to give this new chapter a try. Thus far, I like the game. It is a good looking game and the campaign is fun and interesting so far. I'm going to play a lot of skirmishes to try and learn the units and faction strategies. I got raped in my only multiplayer practice match so far, but I think that the ladder system and getting more familiar with the game and the units will help.

I just finished the single player campaign... it's very... I dunno, it's a strange pastiche of Warhammer and Firefly. They even made Raynor speak like a more macho Mal at some points.

I'm sure they spent 90% of their time working out the tech and worrying about multiplayer, but the campaign storyline just comes off like a very generic science fiction story written by someone who loves Warhammer 40k. Here's hoping that the alien campaigns are more interesting because they don't have much to rely on in terms of pop culture references.

Well... that pretty much describes Starcraft 1's storyline as well. :p
