Ok, now I’ve seen it.

I have mixed feelings. Many things about it were really well executed, and it kinda feels like a strong end to the arc.

But, it’s still way too close to the source material, it’s a lot like Force Awakens only with fewer gaping problems.

Also about Rey’s ancestry. I really liked it in Last Jedi when they established Rey’s power had nothing to do with her bloodline, and they destroyed that. But, it does address the criticism that the force came too easy to her. And all in all it kinda worked.

I was a fan of the counter-fairytale aspect of Last Jedi. But can’t they find something in between that and well executed rehash?

I just got back from seeing Star Wars IX: The Rise of Skywalker. It does indeed bring the "Skywalker Saga," and the Empire, to a decisive end.

Rey, Poe, Finn, Rose, Threepio, Artoo, and BB-8 don't buy it in the end.

Random thought that I had watching the film:
When Rey is called Palpatine's grandaughter:

Maybe this has already been discussed to death, but was anyone else kinda disappointed to see Leia trying to harness the force? I never felt she'd have any real inclination to learn the ways of the force.

JJA could have left Rey as the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Drunkardnobody and it would have changed absolutely nothing in TROS.

Her being Palpy's granddaughter didn't create any personal conflict for her. There's no connection between the two... It's not like she sat on Palpy's knee as a child while he talked about the good ol' days. She had the vision of evil-Rey and was revolted, so clearly she has no desire to follow in his footsteps as a Sith lord.

The only reason I can think of for changing Rey's ancestry, is to explain her ability to master in minutes, techniques that took previous Jedi years of training. I guess it's not completely without precedent. Luke too picked up Jedi abilities at a record pace in ESB.

That apparently happened in episode 6.5

You are correct, Leia never seemed to show any type of Force sensitivity, even in ROTJ after we find out that she’s a Skywalker, though she obviously passes it down to her son Ben.

She was able to sense Luke calling out to her when he was dangling from the bottom of Cloud City. in Return of the Jedi, she claimed that somehow she had always known that Luke was her brother.

Sorry, I had forgotten about Luke’s call for help when he was hanging from the antenna.

When exactly was the decision made to make her Luke’s sister? I always thought it was well after ESB, otherwise we may have been spared their cringeworthy kiss-on-the-mouth scene in that film.

I'm pretty sure that Leia was always meant to be the "anothef" referred to by Yoda. whether or not Lucas intended there to be a blood tie at the time, I couldn't tell you

Technically that didn't happen because Leia had any force sensitivity. Originally the 'other' was some new character as Luke's sister getting trained on the other side of the galaxy. I remember reading ROTJ originally ended on a sadder note with Luke leaving to find her, but not sure if that's true. In any case, the thing in ESB was more because Luke was reaching out to her than anything else. It's already established that Jedi can send messages into people's minds even if they aren't force sensitive, so this reaching out doesn't seem like a huge stretch from that.

Honestly though, I'm not even talking about force sensitivity. I just don't think she'd want to learn because:
  • Regardless of the era it seems like training to be a Jedi is a pretty big commitment, and Leia always seemed like she'd be very involved politically in the rebuilding of the Republic. I feel like she'd prioritize those responsibilities and would always have something more important going on than lifting rocks with her mind.
  • Leia always seemed more to be of a more practical mind than Luke and maybe wouldn't value the more spiritual Jedi way of life or even the abilities that life might grant her. She'd probably get more personal fulfilment out of drafting treaties, reworking the senate, and so on.
  • I think Leia would generally have a far more skeptical view of the force and the Jedi than Luke. I can't imagine her coming to terms with what her father did in the same way Luke did, and I can see how that would turn her away from accepting any control over the force herself. This is actually something I wish they'd addressed in the sequels.
I know there are reasons Leia might want to learn the ways of the force, but from what we know of her character it doesn't seem like she'd have any real inclination.
