I have to watch it again before I can write some kind of post on it... But Palpatine having a son? When exactly did it happen?:censored:

Seems like the son would have been born during the time of the Empire. Rey is 19 when the saga ends. Her folks look to be late 20s when they drop her off, so let's say between 10 and 5 BBY was when the dad was born. That means deformed Palpatine fathered him. Lovely.

Palpatine also had a son in the EU novels. As I recall, he had a third eye or some weird thing like that. Real-world monarchs always made sure they had an heir. So why shouldn't the Emperor?

As for Lucas's thoughts on the Emperor's fate... After ROTJ wrapped up, Lucas told McDiarmid that the Emperor was dead.
Then when the EU was getting in gear, Lucas told Tom Veitch it was okay to bring the Emperor back in "Dark Empire."

Not that Lucas's approval or disapproval actually adds any weight to anything. His latter-day Star Wars is Jar-Jar Binks and midichlorians

Current RT ratings, I'm surprised how high the audience score it right now

Neither Jar Jar or Midichlorians are bad things, so I don't know what your point is.
Sure you keep telling yourself that.

Not ready to give it a grade yet, but bearing in mind I don't like JJ as a film maker, pretty much hated TFA which my son liked quite a lot, I wasn't expecting much when Jr. sent me a huge list of grievances - edited here :

"Quite honestly might be the worst star wars film ever, I had my head in my hands for the first hour. It's awful.

End was a bit fun but hilariously stupid.

A sad end and a bad way to say bye to Carrie.

Not consistent with the trilogy in overarching plot and character development.

Writing is painfully bad.

Invalidates most of the work the last Jedi did.

Generally lousy.

Fanservice was cool but it felt like a crutch because the film couldn't stand without it.

Giving Rey a lineage was stupid

Hux was thrown away.

Snoke being a clone is silly.

First half feels like JJ trying to fit in his episode 8 so he can do episode 9 which came off as extremely disjointed from the trilogy.

Extremely disrespectful towards Rian Johnson, retconning almost all of the elements of TLJ.

Text crawl made me burst out laughing.

Film feels like a sequel to a film I haven't seen and I'm not sure I want to.

Trilogy was meant to be moving away from the original series, saying goodbye, and forging its own path only for JJ to come back and make it all about the original trilogy.

I feel bad for the cast who got their final film outshon by forced nostalgia.

It's without a doubt my worst cinema experience ever.

I was both bored and angry all the way through.

Words fail me. "

I should point out we both loved TLJ.

Anyway, saw it today and I must admit that I agree with a lot of Jr's points BUT I really enjoyed it.

REALLY enjoyed it.

I'm hovering around a "B" at the moment but want a bit more time.

Agreed and he can calm down by looking at his bank account balance.................

Of course everyone is entitled to their opinions but I really disagree with this......I thought it was amazing how they used the footage and wrapped up Leia's story. They did not have too many options and I prefer this to the thought of an off screen death OR a CGI Leia.

Yeah, I agree they did her appearance extremely well. Jr. meant it was a shame this film was her farewell, not that her footage was badly done.

As I said, I'm surprised I liked it. And I did really enjoy it - JJ gets a pass from me on this one !

Agreed. Honestly negative reactions to these movies are a pretty big win for Lucas after the prequels.

A-
I enjoyed the overall Sith heavy story and how it truly seemed inspired by Dark Empire, which was the best of the EU. I have to check the comic, but the dialog from Palpatine explaining his death seemed close to the book. His look was awesome too. Really fucking creepy and more in line with the vibe from ROTJ. I liked how all the main characters were handled. Leia being a Master was great and I loved it. C3PO was a riot in this one. The quick cameos and Jedi voices were cool. I guess Rey would be a major assassination target if she kept the Palpatine family name, so I suppose I can accept the name change. I'm glad Ben died.

It's good. It moves a bit quick and there are a few moments I don't like the writing, but the rest I really dug. I think it's a fine conclusion the the original saga and I'm happy with what we got.

Rey taking on the Skywalker name in the end is something that was not only seeded by JJ himself in TFA, but that is also wholly consistent with and appropriate to the situation she finds herself in with Luke, Leia, and Ben throughout both TFA and TLJ (especially TLJ).

In making that choice, Rey is embracing the concept of "found family" and acknowledging and paying tribute to Luke, Leia, and Ben's roles in her life and the impact they had on her. It's also acknowledging that she isn't defined by her biology but is choosing how she defines who she is and what becomes of her.

The film was fine. Knowing what to expect, from having been exposed to the leaks, my expectations were low for the film. I may see it again, to see what I didn't see before. There was a lot of detail put into many of the shots. The issues I have with the film are common to most of JJ Abarms' films that I have seen.

Quick thoughts: Riding a horse on a ship and shooting an ARROW to destroy a ship? Also did they not "finish" a scene with Lando and that horse bow and arrow chick. Heard from the leaks she's his daughter, but just when it seemed they would mention that.. they leave it hanging. I don't like Rey much but I, for some reason, got a real laugh out of how fast she put "bad ass" Keri Russel on the pavement!

I thought it was quite the stumble. Overstuffed and under baked.

The scenes with Leia are a weird Mad Libs thing and a stand in. “This is what we have of her talking, what can the other side be?” It’s wooden and obvious.

The sacrifices that are immediately reversed are annoying.

Rey’s ancestry is an eye roll, especially how the reveal is handled. “Let’s just tell her!”

And the final Reylo moment is cringing and, my audience anyway, laughed.

Moments aren’t earned because everything is moving so fast. Rather than giving the characters he has time to be characters, Abrams adds more and more.

I was disappointed.

Edited to add: and they made such a deal and Finn wanting to say something to Rey and then just dropped it.
