It's a galaxy far far away, and not a separate universe. Physics in the universe is shall we say, universal..lol

SW was conceptualized at a time when the words galaxy and universe were sometimes used interchangeably. It might as well be another universe. Alternatively, it may be characteristic of that galaxy, which is held together by the Force. Or it's subject to weird stellar phenomenon.

Thing is, it's also a galaxy where the characters can see a star system destroyed by a giant blaster bolt in real-time. It's a fairy tale, that starts almost every movie with "Once upon a time."

I'm still amazed that there are people that liked The Force Awakens, let alone those that dislike The Last Jedi.

Everyone's different I suppose...

I'm still amazed that people can watch the PT and hate it. To the point of still bashing it almost two decades later. But whatevs.

TLJ was a great Star Wars film. I absolutely loved it. It's B-plot didn't help the heroes, but fit perfectly with the thematic aspects of the film (learning from failure). Plus Rey, Luke, Leia, Rose all really shine ... even Kylo's conflict was handled quite well. This was the evolution that Star Wars needed.

And I can't think of the movie I just saw and imagine RAVE reviews, the likes of which were on Twitter a few days ago. A few moments were great, sure...but the whole movie is just a mess. Holes and missed opportunities, mixed with some cool sequences.

I'll watch it again, but for now, all I feel is "At least it's better than Force Awakens."

Hi. I rarely ever stray from several Trek forums. Most of you folks writing here are SW fans, I assume. You make Trek fans seem positively optimistic! I didn't know that was possible.

So I am the casual fan. Saw ANH in a movie palace in 1977. I've been really waiting for this movie because of suspense AND because it's another evening to revisit a wonderful "universe" (vibe, visuals, sonics, music) I've been visiting since boyhood. (HEAR THAT, Star Trek franchise execs? You don't HAVE to reboot the production design every time just to look kewl!)

I digress.

I can't imagine seeing this movie and thinking it was garbage, but our mileage varies. It was a half-hour too long for me. But, things I liked . . .

Luke is not perfect. (This is a little non-mythic, with straight-up myth being SW's strong suit, e.g. "the hero" unadulterated, but we still have that in Rey. This is why I don't mind no-backstory Snope. He is just the Bad Guy-Shadow. That's all. Vader had no backstory in ANH, right?

The resistance is not our plucky rag-tag band who magically wins at the end. They're beyond decimated and no one likes them.

It is admitted the Jedi are failures. As an outsider, I've thought this before. I am sure true fans have dissected this for years. Movin' on . . .

Yoda zaps the Jedi tree. Seriously, sometimes it's time to move on. Sorry, if I'm callous; maybe this feels like the Enterprise biting it in STIII, which was horrible to me.

Rose's line not to fight what you hate, but focus on love. That's what Mother Teresa said. If you focus on what you hate, you're focusing on that, and it still has you.

Ben's ambiguity. I really didn't know what would happen. Though I think it's time to stop turning him. IV-Vi was the redemption of Anakin, so I bet they don't abandon that in this midrash trilogy. We'll see.

A connection between Rey and Ben.

Rey's NOT being someone famous's offspring. Anakin was a nobody, wasn't he?

The whole keep-resisting thing even when you've lost and no one is coming to your aid magically: that gave me real food for thought regarding some recent life events.

So, yeah, I had an enjoyable time at the movies last night.

Anakin was a nobody, wasn't he?

Possibly a nobody. Possibly an instrument of destiny, immaculately conceived by the Force itself.

You know: the usual.

In spite of the criticism (or praise) that the PT over explained nearly every bit of detail in the SW world, that’s one thing they left pretty vague. Just a throwaway line about ‘no father’, that could be interpreted any which way.

No, I’m not counting the novels. Not only is that explanation a bit ambiguous itself, not only was it never canon, but that ‘reveal’ really was beating upon a perfectly fine dead horse.

If it's any consolation to you who were Grievous-ly disappointed by this and can't understand raves, I feel that way about JJ-Trek. Many people love those babies (not Darkness so much), and I really disliked them. (Too Star Wars - y.)

Though I like Star Wars being Star Wars-y. That's why I liked ep vii: It was Midrash: retelling a story I liked before with some twists (Rey). So I liked it again. Yes, like a classic James Bond film. Then once re-started they could do some neat things story-wise with this one.

Rogue One, however, was such a rote World War II "platoon/squad-mission" movie, it seemed like a waste of effort, other than it made big bucks for its owner. I could see how haters could hate that one. Though even with that one, I enjoyed being immersed in that familiar universe for a couple hours.

It's weird to be on the LIKING end of things for once!

Thanks, so much. I actually like Trek DSC ok, too, so that's been a nice feeling too.

ANOTher really obvious thing I like about this new film: strong female characters so that I don't even have to think about the Bechdel test anymore. I will love Trek:VOY to my dying day for the strong women role models for my first daughter who saw it first-run. I love Rey as does my younger daughter, and now Rose and Laura Dern's character who turned out not to be a jerk/putz (unlike every Trek admiral). Her plan woulda worked if not for the failed casino-planet attempt which was really hothead pilot's idea. This move gets better the more I think about it.

Ricky stop trolling FFS.

Over the last 24 hours, I keep seeing the same criticism online from a section of "fans" about no character development and they leave me just flabbergasted, what film were these people seeing? Poe, Kylo & Rey in particular see huge growth in this movie.
