    The stage is the actor's medium.
    Films are the director's medium.
    The television series is the producer's medium.
    It's always been that way.

    At any rate, notice that Luke disappeared. There was no body.

    Kenobi's body disappeared. So did Yoda's. We saw them again.

    Mace Windu's body didn't disappear. Neither did Qui-Gon Jinn's. Neither did Anakin Skywalker's, even though Luke managed to redeem him from being Vader.

    We saw Kenobi again. We saw Yoda again, years later. We even saw Anakin again, briefly, even though his body didn't disappear.

    So certain are you, that we've seen the last of Luke Skywalker?

    Rey in episode 9:

    "Luke! It's good to see you.

    ...you're glowing... and... you're ...floating."

    Luke: "We all float, down here!"

    You might as well ask the same about many of today's directors who have this need to write their own scripts. I believe it all began with Billy Wilder.

    Only if the director is also the producer.

    Well maybe when he hit the street or another building on his way down, he vanished :)

    Not at all. In many cases, the producer of a film takes no creative role at all. It's no accident that where the "open" of a film has credits at all, the director has the privilege of appearing last (and in the Star Wars films, since the "open" is totally devoid of credits, the director has the privilege of being the first name you see in the "close").

    Everybody who's taken notice of the people behind the camera in Airplane! remembers that it was co-directed by Jim Abrahams and the Zucker Brothers (all of whom insisted upon equal credit, and none of whom could reputedly get anything done unless all three were present), but how many people remember that it was produced by Jon Davison?

    In series television, however, the series creator is almost always one of the producers, and scheduling rarely permits a single director to be involved in all, or even a majority of the episodes.

    As for Mace Windu, well, I hear that Samuel L. Jackson has expressed interest in returning as Mace Windu. Who has, by now, probably "had it with these <incestuous> Sith Lords and their <incestuous> stormtroopers, trying to build <incestuous> empires."

    Since they're doing all these spinoffs, they should make a mace movie. The theme of the movie would derive from the engraving on his lightsaber.

    It could be Star wars meets Mel Gibson's "Payback."

    In 2004, I gave up Mel Gibson movies for Lent. I never bothered to stop giving them up. Then again, the only Mel Gibson movie I'd ever seen was Chicken Run (which only had his voice). Wanna buy my copy of Chicken Run, cheap?

    Never heard of it until shortly before I responded to your post bringing it up. As to why I gave up Mel Gibson movies for Lent in 2004, it has to do with a specific Mel Gibson movie released around that time.

    Oh, I thought you were joking. I remember seeing that film back in 2004, on an afternoon, I just walked into the theater alone and watched it. I think it's the only time I've ever done that on a whim like that.

    Well, in 2004, I was half-joking about giving up Mel Gibson movies for Lent. (Sort of like decades ago, when the old KFAC was still on the air, as the commercial classical station for the Greater Los Angeles market, disc jockey Tom Dixon had a running joke about giving up playing Ravel's Bolero [which everybody knew he despised] on the air for Lent.) But about giving up Mel Gibson, I was only half-joking. And I really have sworn off his movies permanently.

    Finally. FINALLY I got to see it, thanks to Amazon digital services (although you can suck it for not letting me watch it in HD, Amazon. "HDCP compliant cables" my ass), and I got there spoiler free.

    I loved it. I'd post more, but I'm still processing everything, as I just finished watching it 10 minutes ago. A few notes, though:

    * It was wonderful to see Luke and Leia back on the big screen together. For me, that alone was worth the price of the film.
    * Crotchety Luke is best Luke.
    * I love Rey.
    * I was surprised to learn that Rey's parents were just junk traders who sold her off. Destroyed my idea that she was Luke's kid. They knew that too, and played it up in the cave.
    * Rose and Finn seem like a really adorable coupling. I hope it actually happens.
    * I seriously underestimated Kylo Ren when it came to turning on Snoke. I like how ignominiously Snoke was dispatched, too. No pomp and fanfare, just done.
    * I love Rey.
    * I was dismayed when the thiefy, code slicer guy turned on Rose and Finn. I mean, yeah he was scummy, but he seemed to be a likable scum.
    * The lightsaber battles were great to see, but what was even greater was that they were short and sweet. I prefer those to extended battle scenes.
    * The porgs didn't bother me at all, which was good. When I saw them crop up in ads, I became a bit concerned. Fortunately, they were kept to a minimum.
    * I love Rey.
    * When the Raddus' bridge exploded and Leia was pulled out, I was shocked. Leia using the force to pull herself back in from the void of space was BAD.ASS.
    * SO MUCH NOSTALGIA. We got a new movie with a lot of draws from the original trilogy, and I think it worked beautifully. Seeing the X-Wing in the lagoon made me teary eyed.
    * The scene where Luke is sitting in the Falcon and R2 reactivates? The ensuing reunion was pitch perfect, as far as I'm concerned.
    * I love Rey.
    * Poe was simultaneously awesome and frustrating, which I think was the point. He clearly had great intentions, but was ready to charge in without thinking. Still, he learned quickly.
    * The trip to the casino city felt a bit odd, but I have to admit I loved it once they got there. Especially the little guy shoving coins in BB-8's slot. That was funny.
    * Learning the backstory of Kylo Ren helped me acclimate to him. He became more of a rounded figure to me, rather than a 2D villain.
    * I love Rey.
    * Rey is my new favorite Jedi.
    * I love Rey.

    So that about sums it up. I gave it an A+, and can't wait until the next film.

    I'm amazed you managed to stay spoiler-free. I've been doing pretty well on that front where the films are concerned ( if only because I see them on opening night ) but not so much when it comes to other stuff.

    I blocked the newsfeeds of more than 30 friends on Facebook, used a filter in my browser that hid keywords like "Star Wars," "Jedi," and so on. I also avoided any and everything that might indicate someone would talk about Star Wars, at all. I was almost spoiled when a live video chat about someone's dogs veered off course when one of the chatters started asking about Luke and Leia, and I shut that feed down fast, just missing what came after the two names mentioned.

    I spent a decade getting my graduate degree, having two kids and dealing with chronic illness. Movies are generally not a priority.
