One of the problems I have always had with the Republic in Star Wars is that it seems so toothless and pointless. No standing army, no centralized law enforcement(or the will to even enforce laws apparently), no centralized schools or social programs. There don't appear to be any benefits or advantages to being in the Republic, other than having a floating pod from which you can yell at your neighbor in the Senate chamber.
From the movies, all we see is a bunch of senators, a few Senatorial guards(Blue helmets hmm) and diplomatic ships, and a somewhat loose affiliation with the Jedi.
It seems much more like the present day UN than pre-Caesar Rome. And while everyone knows the UN is corrupt, no one is trying to abandon or leave it, it is a useful place to dialogue. Likewise the Seperatists have no clear reason to leave the Republic(other than being duped by Palpatine). Greed? It is never illustrated how they are going to make more money outside the Republic. Moral or social differences? Not mentioned.
Had Lucas and company given(onscreen) the Seperatists some sympathetic and understandable motivations it would have given a far deeper sense of tragedy to the Clone Wars, which was obviously intended judging from the "heroes on both sides" line. But since that never happened, the cries of "Republic corruption" ring false throughout the Prequel trilogy. Show us, don't tell us.
