If I want to watch Top Gun or its sequel, I'll watch those. I have, and I will; I really enjoy them.
But that hardly means that I want new films going forward necessarily to resemble them in any way.
Allusions, references are one thing, and they're quite often perfectly fine. (Hello, The Dam Busters!)
In retrospect, one of the great things about Return of the Jedi is that it did not attempt to top the Death Star attack of the original film. Its "less is more" approach in the space battle scenes allowed it to go its own way and develop its own story beats, which were quite apart from those of the original film.
Whatever this new film brings to the table, I want it to be its own thing. Actually bring something new to the table. If I feel like I'm watching Top Gun in space, I'm going to start thinking that the film is a failure with nothing new to actually offer. A reference here and there? Fine. The most important thing, though: give me something I've never seen before, in fact a lot of that, so I can enjoy this film and enjoy rewatching it.
