Was the hauling cargo background a thing from the EU? It's been a while since I read the X-Wing novels and I want to say the Antillies family business was a refuelling station.

I think Legends did have something about Wedge flying a freighter briefly after he lost his family and before he joined the Rebel Alliance.

Out of curiosity I just had a quick look at his 'Legends' article on Wookipedia. Damn, that is one convoluted mess of a backstory. If I can keep this straight he grew up on an orbital refuelling station, dreamed about being an architect but went to agricultural school (because reasons?) whole also working as a mechanic and civilian pilot AND sometimes going on smuggling runs with Mirax & Booster...all this before the age of eighteen.

Jeez, and people complained that Rey was excessively skilled!
This kind of thing is exactly why Disney clearing the decks was a great idea. Just from that brief summery you can tell it's a frankensteinian construction of several authors contributions, all stitched together without any sense of cohesion or foresight.

Having him as an Imperial pilot cadet that defects is *way* more interesting than that mess.

Yeah, but… isn't that Biggs Darklighter's back story?

Yup. And Han Solo's (in the EU), Crix Madine's, Thane Kyrell's and probably about a dozen other EU characters, not to mention Sabine's of course.
Realistically speaking, there's only a few places where a person can receive training in starfighter combat and thats mostly going to be Imperial Academies. Indeed, they may have been the thinking as early as ANH since if you look at the make-up of the rebels on Yavin, they're mostly kids and old men. That means probably cadet defectors and Clone War veterans respectively.

Anyway, I said "interesting" not "wholly original" and if it's also even slightly coherent than it's already a massive improvement over the EU's version. ;)

As someone who loves the X-Wing books, Wedge's original origin was great, and he didn't have a ridiculous amount of skills when it comes to space pilot type characters. Now, he's just imperial pilot defector #23456754.

A statement in blatant contradiction of the facts as per usual. But that's OK, you hold onto those misconceptions, they're what makes you special. ;)

That really doesn't go against anything I said. I think his backstory was pretty good, and felt fairly believable, especially for a SW character. I was also aware of the vast majority of it, so absolutely no misconceptions on my part

^Just so we're clear; this to you is "fairly believable"?

That couldn't be any less coherent if they just randomly picked those plot points of of a hat! I'm just amazed they didn't slip circus acrobat and bestselling novelist in there. It wouldn't be so bad if this was after a lifetime of travels and adventures, but most of this is before he even finished puberty!

Well, we'll just have to agree to disagree, I guess  I think that all works for Wedge, and outside of agriculture school all those things fit fairly well together.

Yeah, but… isn't that Biggs Darklighter's back story?
Depends. The actual deleted scene from ANH carries the implication that "the Academy" that Biggs was attending and Luke moans about wanting to run off to is not actually an Imperial academy:
LUKE: Well, I'll be at the Academy next season... after that who knows. I won't be drafted into the Imperial Starfleet that's for sure...
Although, the EU went ahead anyway and said "the Academy" was the Imperial Flight Academy or something.
Now, he's just imperial pilot defector #23456754.
Does make him seem more like an Everyman.

Wedge was the Everyman, designated survivor. He's basically that one NPC extra that always lives through the big battles where more or less only the main characters are likely to survive. He is the only pilot to have run the attack in both Death Stars as far as we know. While the Millennium Falcon was at both, the crew changed. While Luke was present and flew out of the Death Star II, he was not on the attack run. Unless that one Y-wing pilot from Yavin was also present inside the Death Star II attack run with Red and Gold Groups, that leaves Wedge as the only one to do both.

Do they have a canon pilot for the Y-wing these days? It use to be Farlander if I recall.

EDIT: I was looking up the current canon back story for Wedge and remembered something from the trailers for Season Three. What was presented in the novels seems to be happening now in Rebels. Wedge joins the Rebellion via Fulcrum (which is probably not Ahsoka this time). He crashed an A-wing on one of, if not his first mission, which nearly crippled him. He was than got himself assigned to a freighter running for the Rebels as a gunner and/or navigator. In the trailers we see a YT-2000 a couple of times. Could be the Outrider with Dash Rendar. Or it could be Wedge...or both. The other option is Wedge gets assigned to the Ghost for a while, though I would assume they wouldn't do that since the crew is sort of full. Though with Kanan blind they probably could use another gunner, unless Rex comes along with them....though they are short an aft gun with the Phantom destroyed.

^I think they categorically stated that the ship in question is *not* the Outrider nor is it piloted by Rendar, but it is a YT-2000.
Bonus trivia, the asset for the show was actually designed by the very same artist who originally designed it for SotE way back when. Apparently she still works at Lucasfilm after all these years.

It turns out it's the backstory of about five hundred and thirty twelve characters of Star Wars. But not Wedge's!

I bet there are many furious Star Wars fans arguing at forums about "canon" and the "Expanded Universe" right now!

I should be getting the first disc of Rebels Season 2 from Netflix either today or tomorrow. It might actually be in the mail now, but it's to late to go get it.

Wedge was also originally supposed to fly escort for Shuttle Tyderium to the moon of Endor and nearly blow cover by panicking. Fortunately for the Wedge fans out there, it was cut.

Also, if the Ghost crew end up on Corellia, I expect a Coran Horn cameo, and a Garm Bel Iblis cameo.
