Star Wars Rebels Season One (spoilers)

So far I'm loving this show. TCW was good, but somehow Rebels feels like Star Wars to me in a way that TCW never did. Maybe it's the closer-to-the-OT time period.

Yeah it'll be nice to hear Jones voicing a scary, badass Vader again. Instead of... whatever that was they made him do at the end of ROTS.

I just hope they do a good job capturing his look and don't oversimplify the design too much like they did with 3PO.

I can see the plot heading to a version of setting up a galaxy spanning Alliance to Restore the Republic based in this group of rebels and other groups they encounter in their travels.

The old roleplaying game sourcebooks mentioned that there were a lot of seperate rebel groups and cells across the Empire. Some only operating on single planets, while other operated in a whole sector. But they usually didn't contact or even know about other rebel groups that might be nearby. But though the efforts of some, like Bail Organa and Mon Mothma, the various groups started to become known to each other and unified before the events leading up to the Battle of Yavin.

I actually can believe it would be senators that could gather the groups up because they would have access to large regions of space without to many questions asked. Small time traders would be asked for "papers" and might be limited to travel in certain sectors or regions.

The same questions I had with Ahsoka in "Clone Wars" are being brought up here.

What will happen to Kazan and Ezra? One competent Jedi and one potential jedi?

Will they go into hiding as things starts getting close to "A New Hope"?

It is a big galaxy. Luke did find other survivors when he was looking for Force Sensitive individuals. (At least in the old EU)

Even in the old roleplaying game, there was almost always a hidden Jedi of some type involved. Usually a "failed jedi" or the equivalet of a padawan that survived. Very rarely was there a Jedi Knight that survived. But those would sometimes show up in campaigns as an ally or a way to get your character aways from the big bad (especially if the big bad was an Inquisitor). They almost always died to save the players.

The player charcter would be a "failed jedi" that teaches a kid that is force sensitive if they decide to go that route, or evena fallen jedi who brushed too close to the dark side and is now in hiding doing penance. Or even a quasi-jedi....a nut case who thinks he's a jedi, and may or may not have any real powers, depending on the player or gamemaster.

In context, Kazan and Ezra could survive past "A New Hope" or even "Return of the Jedi", the touble being that neither would be formal Jedi Knights, and thus Skywalker would be the last or first of the lines and be the only one qualified to be a real Master of the Force (regardless of how skilled Kazan might be). It is also possible they die as somepoint for the Rebellion, or fall to the dark side and thus cannot become full Knights easily without aid from Skywalker.

Mind you it is like five seasons away from the Battle of Yavin right now...if a season equals a year, which is may not as the Clone Wars was five or six seasons long, yet the war was only three years.

Well who knows, there's supposed to be a connection between Rebels and the new movies, so maybe that means we'll see a much older Ezra pop up in Episode VII.

It would certainly be cool to suddenly see one of these Rebels characters pop up in live action. And of course they can get around the "last of the Jedi" thing easily, since Ezra still wouldn't be an officially trained Jedi.

And then they'll put the Outrider in ANH:SE and it'll make you think GL cares about the EU...I've been down this road before.

kidding - it'd be neat but I wonder how much JJ cares about the new EU.

Well I think Rebels is considered more than just part of a "new EU". Disney clearly wants it to be as important and canon as any of the movies. So I think it could definitely happen, if not in Ep VII then in one of the followups.

It doesn't really matter much what Abrams thinks, anyway, except for when it comes to Episode VII. Outside of that one movie it doesn't look like he has much influence at all.

And Rebels, like The Clone Wars, is most definitely not on the same level as the old EU.

New Kanan comic from Marvel

So is the name Kanan a bit of an inside joke (canon...)?

Watched Droids in Distress on iTunes and thought it was a solid episode. The proto-
Walkers
were cool to see. I felt like the characters meshed together better than in the pilot.

Interestingly, I noticed it looked really good because the textures were more pronounced. I'm not sure if that's because the episode improved on the pilot or if it's because the iTunes recording is better than my cable. I'll be curious to compare when it airs proper. I'm going to be disappointed if it's just getting crushed from compression on cable.

I'd like it if they would take a few extra beats on the beauty shots and cool moments. Sometimes it seems quickly edited like "it's just a cartoon, move to the next scene" and undersells itself.

I think I'm just gonna stick with the iTunes versions myself. Quality is great on my big screen TV and it's a lot easier to get into the story without all the distracting commercials, network logos and popup ads.

And on a kids network like Disney that stuff just seems even more pronounced and annoying than usual.

It's not pronounced the same way. Instead it sounds like "Canaan" from the Bible, which is a more likely referent. After all, Endor was the name of a Canaanite village in the Bible.

These Biblical references are easily explained: in Icons: Intimate Portraits, Denise Worrell describes that Lucas kept a copy of Harpers Bible Dictionary on his desk when he was writing [Return of the] Jedi, a useful catalog for interesting names.

So maybe Kanan's father saw Master Yoda drunken and naked and was forced out of the order which explains why he wasn't around when Order 66 came around. :)
