Star Wars: Episode VII: The Nerd Rage Awakens

Getting hyped up about a movie that won't be released for months = bad thing. Especially if it's supposed to be a huge blockbuster like TFA.

This movie should be so huge that it has legs. The idea that people won't go see it because it wasn't advertised well enough is faulty on many levels.

If it's a box-office disappointment, it will be for one reason only: because it's a disappointment as a film.

People have been hyped up about this movie ever since it was announced. And how is a movie going to be huge is it's not advertised. The prequels were huge box office hits, yet that hasn't stopped people from claiming them as disappoints somehow.

I'm thrilled that Disney has Star Wars. Disney has a ton of money and influence to put behind SW, even more so than Lucas. Other than wanting a new trailer, I haven't been disappointed by anything Disney has done. They've done a great job with Marvel since they go it, and I have a feeling SW will be the same.
As for the movies themselves, I don't judge based on the studio making them, I base my feeling on the writers, directors, producers, and other people who take a more active role in production. All studios make great movie, and all studios make crap movies, so that doesn't really make a difference for me.

The same way that it could disappoint if it is poorly done. Word of mouth and internet provide a much more powerful influence than any advertising can do.

First of all, the early advertising for this film (and the hype that followed) was too much for me. It was over-done as the first trailer was dissected frame by frame.

As for the PT, shouldn't that be an encouragement that they were still box office successes, even if they were critically considered disappointments (they were to me, any way)? It was the first SW film in 30 years, and it was still a major event.

Remember, the guy who turned Star Wars into a franchise with cute teddy bears and wacky slapstick aliens designed to appeal to kids didn't have the last name of Disney. It was Lucas.

Know what Disney did oversee the release of when it owned Miramax? Clerks and Pulp Fiction. Two of the most un-Disneylike, non-cuddly films in recent movie history. Whether they personally produce a movie themselves or just greenlight and then distribute and release it they have a stronger track record than a lot of other studios.

This is pretty cool:

Case in point, new images of a Hasbro Black Series figure for a character named Ello Asty have just made it online. It’s a character who’s been online in leaked concept art and stuff, but this is our best, full look at him. And he’s super cool. Plus, there’s an odd but awesome link to the Beastie Boys.

Minor spoilers follow.

What’s more, Yakface reports that the Aurebesh writing on his helmet (not visible in these pictures) says “Born to Ill,” which seems odd until you look at his name again. Add an “H” and “N.” It’s “Hello Nasty,” the name of the 1998 Beastie Boys album. They also had the album, “Licensed to Ill,” which makes that link. There’s more on Making Star Wars.

Also, don’t forget, J.J. Abrams put the Beastie Boys song Sabotage in the first Star Trek, so he’s certainly a fan.

That's not what I meant, as (hopefully) clarified in my last post. Being hyped != getting hyped up by a media bombardment.
That should actually start pretty soon. The toy release and tie-in books has already happened. The trailer should be out any day now and I think it was announced or leaked that the TV spots start around Thanksgiving. I think they may be trying to avoid wearing people out on it and give audiences just enough to want more. Unlike other films where they spoil the movie in the trailer.

It is a fine balance to strike, to be sure, and I don't envy the marketing department at all. On the one had, you want to leak enough so that people are interested in going and seeing the film. You want merchandising to be done enough so that people have fun with it, but not too much is spoiled, as well as any tie-in material.

On the other hand, you don't want to give away everything, as you said. It can feel frustrating that there isn't enough material to give the proper sense of what the film is going to be about.

Hopefully, the next trailer will give a hint as to more of the story, and the character's role in it. I want to be excited for Poe Dameron but all we know is that he is a pilot so that's not really enough.

I do agree with you on Poe Dameron. They seem to be making him out to be part of the new Han/Luke/Leia big three with Rey and Finn, and while we've seen quite a bit of them, we've barely seen him.

Yeah while Disney clearly wants to make money off their investment, I haven't seen anything to suggest they're just cranking out product without any regard to quality (as we've seen with certain studios and their superhero movies lately), or are just trying to coast on the SW name alone.

Granted the Marvel movies have started to feel a bit safe and formulaic lately, but I put the blame for that much more on the Marvel producers than whatever Disney might be doing.

I'm assuming he and Finn meet up and that's how Finn gets to Jakku. The teaser shows a TIE attacking Stormtroopers and the toys show that they have two seats now. I figure he's either with Finn and Rey the whole movie or he has his own subplot through the movie, we just haven't seen enough footage and I think all of it is from the first act.

We also know that BB-8 is Poe's droid, so Poe must end up on Jakku at some point so they can get separated and BB-8 can end up with Rey.

Didn't they also own Miramax when they helped make Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World, which includes such things as amputations, an onscreen suicide, a flogging, lots of shooting and stabbing, 19th century surgery, and ect.?

This is my hope as well, Poe is the character we know the least about. I'm sure they can give some glimces into the movie without giving too much away.

Poe gets captured by the First Order somehow (in the trailer) and Finn saves him by hijacking a TIE and flying them down to Jakku where they crash land, right?

If this has been mentioned before, I apologize. :)

My only prediction for Star Wars Ep VII.

Someone saying to Captain Phasma: "Aren't you a little tall for a stormtrooper?"
:D

I don't know, but they might have owned the company at the time that movie was produced and released. They also own the ABC Networks on American television and there are more than a few non-family friendly series that have aired in prime time since the Disney acquisition. Disney doesn't always mean "dumbed down, cute fluff for kids and families" in spite of what some likely think.

I'll put it this way-I will be very surprised if they don't :)

Potential Spoiler:

I've heard that Leia sends Poe's squadron (the best there is) to collect a certain found object
