Star Wars: Episode VII: The Nerd Rage Awakens

I do agree with you on Poe Dameron. They seem to be making him out to be part of the new Han/Luke/Leia big three with Rey and Finn, and while we've seen quite a bit of them, we've barely seen him.
I'm assuming he and Finn meet up and that's how Finn gets to Jakku. The teaser shows a TIE attacking Stormtroopers and the toys show that they have two seats now. I figure he's either with Finn and Rey the whole movie or he has his own subplot through the movie, we just haven't seen enough footage and I think all of it is from the first act.

Poe's wearing the brown and red jacket when he gets captured.

Finn's wearing it down on Jakku - this doesn't make me think Poe survives the crash.

Didn't they also own Miramax when they helped make Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World, which includes such things as amputations, an onscreen suicide, a flogging, lots of shooting and stabbing, 19th century surgery, and ect.?

I don't know, but they might have owned the company at the time that movie was produced and released. They also own the ABC Networks on American television and there are more than a few non-family friendly series that have aired in prime time since the Disney acquisition. Disney doesn't always mean "dumbed down, cute fluff for kids and families" in spite of what some likely think.

Disney didn't divest itself of Miramax until 2010.

We also know that BB-8 is Poe's droid, so Poe must end up on Jakku at some point so they can get separated and BB-8 can end up with Rey.

Poe gets captured by the First Order somehow (in the trailer) and Finn saves him by hijacking a TIE and flying them down to Jakku where they crash land, right?
Is this a guess, or did you actually hear about this somewhere?

Actually I think that is just a Resistance uniform. Some of the stuff I've seen has shown guys wearing that jacket with just a generic Resistance fighter title instead of a name.

Don't know if it was already discussed here, but looks like we might have an explanation for where the name "Finn" comes from.

http://makingstarwars.net/2015/10/s...ns-and-an-interesting-rumor-about-finns-name/

The article doesn't go this far, but it seems reasonable that when Rey first meets him and he gives his designation as FN-2187, she simply says "Um, how about I just call you Finn for short?"

Already mentioned in this post:

Woudn't that be a throwback to how some of the Clones during the Prequel era got their nicknames, from their individual code designations? Stormtrooper code designations go all the way back to trooper TK-421 in the original film but they didn't start getting casual nicknames at least partly based on those letters and numbers until the Prequels and the Clone Wars animated series were produced. Catchy nicknames gave individual Clone Commanders and Troopers more warmth and personality.

Although that could be a common jacket design used by members of the Resistance (think back to the common jackets, vests and shirts worn by Rebel officers and troopers during the Original Trilogy). Finn could easily be wearing another one while Poe keeps his while in First Order custody (he's still wearing it when the Stormtrooper takes him at gunpoint into the detention block aboard the Star Destroyer or inside a base, as seen in the Comic-Con footage reel).

I have to agree. I have seen action figures with "Resistance Fighter" dressed in a similar jacket so that leads me to think it is a uniform of some kind.

Great. Does this mean I have to catch up on Clone Wars to understand TFA? ;)

Nope, but it's never really a bad idea to catch up on your viewing of The Clone Wars. :)

Certainly possible. It's my own supposition.

I've seen the "resistance trooper" figure and its jacket is similar but not identical as Finn/Poe.

I'm keeping an open mind. This could be the best Star Wars movie in more than 30 years even if the spoiler synopses sound a little meh.

I watched The Phantom Menace on Blu-ray today, in my run up to The Force Awakens. It really isn't a bad movie. Yeah, they laid a little too much of the story on young Anakin and Jar-Jar. But it was still a fairly solid movie.

It could have never lived up to the hype of being the first new Star Wars movie in sixteen years. Besides, love or hate the prequels, Lucas earned the right to make the movies he wanted to make.

This point is quite correct, and definitely needed to be repeated. Lucas made the films that he wanted to with the tech that he wanted to. That is all fine by me.

I also just don't find them very enjoyable. The brief summary of TFA has potential, but I'm hoping that my initial reaction is wrong, and that the Resistance's and First Order's origin make a little more sense.

I'm still optimistic, just the summary felt kind of weird to me. I don't know

This is what the fandom thought about TPM back in 99 too and that it was going to be a Titanic killer

Fair enough, but history doesn't always repeat itself and at least Lucas isn't writing and directing this one. And I say that as a fan that actually enjoys TPM in spite of all its many flaws, shortcomings and creative missteps.

All it has to do is be good. Great would be nice, but at this point I just want it to wow me and make me feel at least somewhat the way I did when I saw the OT as a small child.
