Star Wars: Episode VII: The Nerd Rage Awakens

I don't know, if it can survive p0lowing into a planet like that, it must be pretty damn hard to take apart for salvage.

I was thinking about this maybe the populace is afraid of taking apart the Star Destroyer? Maybe they're afraid the Empire will come back for it and don't want to be on the receiving end of the wrath of whoever comes for it?

There could also be the fear amongst the locals that the Empire booby trapped crashed ships to prevent looting. For all we know the previous regime did just that during its rule to instill fear in citizens and subjects and keep them from trespassing and handling any sensitive Imperial weapons, equipment and technology.

Somebody mentioned the impact on the planet a while back. It seems like the ship probably soft landed in the way the Enterprise did in Generations. It survived more or less intact.

I believe they showed the earlier models used during the Clone Wars take off from Coruscant in Episode II and in the Clone Wars series.

Yep. The Acclamator Assault Ships are shown landed on Kamino, Geonosis, and Coruscant in Attack of the Clones. In Revenge of the Sith we see the Venator Class landed on Coruscant and Kashyyk.

Seeing these pictures i wonder why these have not been picked clean by Junkers and scrap metal traders.. 20 years or so should be plenty of enough time to even dismantle a Star Destroyer and sell whatever tech survived the crash.

Then again we would not have gotten this awesome shot in the trailers ;)
They could have stripped the inside and just left the outer shell. We only see the outside, so the inside could just be nothing but the skeleton.

Star Wars Rebels has shown them in a planet's atmosphere.

And the Prequels (and possibly episodes of The Clone Wars) showed their smaller and less powerful Republic-era predecessors landing on and taking off from the surfaces of planets. Star Destroyers or their counterparts in any era of the Saga may be perfectly capable of both atmospheric entry and landing provided they're of a certain size.

It might be possible to land an Imperial Star Destroyer, but they look much more intimidating when they hover over a city while shining down massive spotlights. Giant mile long starship just floating their in a threatening manner.

The demo of the Jakku mission at E3 in the new Battlefront game shows a Star Destroyer crashing in a similar position. Also Jakku appears to be a desert planet prior to the battle.

However, the game's 'canon' is a bit weird, since it also shows Luke in his ROTJ outfit fighting Vader on Hoth.

I can't believe that in a little over five months we are getting a new Star Wars film. It's surreal. In less than two weeks, we will be getting a full theatrical trailer for it that will crystallize the story details.

Let this sink in for a bit

And the action figures and other toys and merchandise from the new film officially debut in just a little more than two months.
