Star Wars: Episode VII: The Nerd Rage Awakens

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

The first good, close-up look at Artoo as he appears in Episode VII.

Yeah, pretty much the same droid we've all known and loved since the original movie first hit theaters way back in 1977, but it's nice to see the little guy in all his classic glory. That little droid's been the real unsung hero of the entire Saga when you think about it, plus by the time the Sequel Trilogy is complete he'll be one of the very few characters to appear in all nine films (and that doesn't count other projects without Episode numbers and titles).

There's something in my eye.

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

I just saw a report on Facebook that we might be getting the very first Episode VII teaser trailer in December.

If so, they'll likely announce the movie's full title by then so the teaser doesn't show just "EPISODE VII" in boldface letters and Roman numerals. The first teasers for each of the three Prequels were accompanied by the movie's full title. I hope this report is true and we get a sneak peek of the new movie footage by Christmas!

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

Actually, now that the EU is gone, I'm really curious if it was ever revealed to Luke that R2 was owned by Luke and Leia's parents. In the EU, the Dark Nest trilogy (besides being a kind of good/kind of bad story about mind controlling bugs) had Luke and Leia learn about their mother, and that R2 was owned by her (Luke saw a hologram of her and Anakin R2 had, which lead to Leia and Luke finding out about their mother). Its something that's up in the air now, since there was no one alive by the end of the OT to tell them about their mother, and obviously no record of their births.

Unless Obi Wan's ghost came back to give them info, R2's one of the only things that knows about their mother and is still around (I'm pretty sure he was never memory wiped like C-3P0). I mean, some people that knew Padme might still be alive, and I'm sure she's remembered on Naboo, but almost no one knew she was the mother of Luke/Leia. Only Obi Wan, Yoda, Bail Organa (and possibly his wife), and R2 (plus C-3P0, but he got a mind wipe) definitely knew about Luke/Leia's parents from what I can tell. Even Luke's aunt/uncle might not have known who Luke's mother was (they might have known it was the woman they met when Anakin was on Tatooine with her in AOTC, though). I doubt this will be brought up in a movie, but its something I'd be interested in seeing a book talk about.
Did the Legends EU ever reveal how Padme eplained away her pregnancy? Did she say it was just a one night stand, or make up a boyfriend or something?
In the (now old) EU Vader actually recognizes Threepio's shattered parts on Cloud City during the events of Empire and is the one who decides to save them and give them back to Chewbacca instead of following an Imperial officer's advice and having the Ugnaughts smelt them down in the recycling facility. There's a scene where Vader holds Threepio's disconnected head and looks at it, recognizing that it's the very same protocol droid he built as a child on Tatooine. He gets a little wistful as a fragment of the old Anakin Skywalker emerges from Vader's darkened soul and he decides he'll spare C-3PO the final indignity of being destroyed.
Which story is this revealed in? I've seen a painting of Vader holding up C-3PO's head, and I always wondered where the scene came from.

A Ryder Windham book. I don't remember the specific title, though.

That's the one! Thanks for the link.

Not that I know of. There weren't very many novels/comics/etc set during the events ROTS (not counting adaptation), and I'm pretty sure there weren't any involving Padme doing anything, and since her pregnancy was first revealed (and went to term) in that movie, the only place where I figure it could have been brought up was in the novelization of the movie, but I doubt they did that. I mean, maybe she was pregnant for a few months before the events of the movie (now that I think about it, I have no idea how long a period of time Episode III covered) but I don't think there were many opportunities for that to be brought up.

That said, it could have been. I've read most SW books, but I can think of a few CW era books I've never read, so its possible, but Wookiepedia doesn't have any info either, so I'd bet it was just never brought it up.

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

I'm pretty sure the ROTS novelization said that nobody knew she was pregnant, she was avoiding public appearances and wearing huge elaborate dresses to cover the bump and using a private medical droid for checkups.

Yeah, she just hid it from everybody.

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

It's very possible that Vader never saw R2-D2 until after his last-minute redemption, return to being Anakin Skywalker and then death. As a Force ghost on Endor he may have caught sight of Artoo celebrating with the Rebels and Ewoks and remembered his old friend.

Good point thanks. As R2 and 3PO race to the Falcon on Hoth doesn't Vader bump into one or either of them?

Forget R2 for a moment, why doesn't Vader recognize 3PO? He built the droid as a child?

3PO is a protocol droid- the exterior is a standard issue case. We see a lot of droids of that make & model through out the films- the Blockade Runner had a number of them. If 3PO was an organic being Vader might have sensed him with the force, but being a machine he was background. It would be like driving in traffic in a strange town and seeing a car similar to one you once drove as a kid- your first thought would not be that is really was your old car...

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

SW has these repeating motifs and it was more important on Lucas' part to repeat things (like having Anakin own the droids) than to create a plausible story-arc. I felt the same way about redoing the death star in ROTJ. I was like, is it really necessary to just have the bad guys say "ah, shucks, let's try again"? Lazy writing.

Hmmm, does Disney have a big movie coming out around then they could attach it to?

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

I'd agree about Vader thinking that Threepio "looks similar" to a droid he once made, but he did have that distinctive silver leg. Probably not too many that match that description. But with his memory wiped, Vader probably wouldn't care anymore.

And in the actual films themselves we can always pretend that Vader recognizes C-3PO on Cloud City and just doesn't say anything (or he does so offscreen when we're not watching). Threepio is a relic of Anakin Skywalker's childhood and years as a Jedi, and Darth Vader purged or buried most of those memories after turning to the Dark Side.

Sure, he probably recognized Threepio but at that point he saw him as he saw his own horribly-scarred and damaged human face in a reflection - a memory of a bygone era that he'd left in the past when he made his choice to become a Sith apprentice.
^This fits pretty well! And in ROTJ:

Luke
: I've accepted the truth that you were once Anakin Skywalker, my father.
Vader
: [angry retort] That name no longer has any meaning for me.

Vader probably didn't want *anything* to do with any reminder of his past. At least up to this point.

Well given how powerful and effective the first Death Star was (and the seemingly unlimited resources of the Empire), I don't find it that strange that they'd want to rebuild it. Especially when they have no problem building fleets of giant Star Destroyers and Super Star Destroyers.

For me the larger storytelling issues with ROTJ are with the dumbed down characters, and the general lack of depth and complexity compared to ESB. The re-use of the Death Star doesn't really bother me at all.

Into the Woods comes out on Christmas Day.

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

Anthony's going to be the positive, happy cheerleader for any Star Wars film or TV project he's in, but it is good to hear that he's so enthusiastic about Episode VII that he's comparing it to Empire. Maybe J.J.'s gonna knock this one right out of the ballpark and blow us all away. Who knows. I hope Anthony's right about this being a great movie even if it doesn't live up to the best moments of the Original Trilogy.

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

The fact he's this positive about the movie now, before it's even been edited together with effects and music, tells me they must have had a really strong story and script to work from.

Or at least that's who I'm choosing to interpret it. :)

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

If anybody involved in the long history of the Star Wars franchise is qualified to speak out about story quality it's an actor like Daniels. Sure, he was never one of the lead characters and didn't get most of the best scenes in the Saga but he's been around longer than almost anybody else except for George Lucas.

If Anthony loves what they just completed filming then it'll probably be quite the entertaining movie.

The silver leg isn't present in the PT, so it wouldn't be a distinguishing mark that Vader could recognize.
