Star Wars Detours Trailer

Well, like I said, humor doesn't have to clash with a serious, believable premise.

But if you want it to be canon, then that you can't really have a comedy series who has in its main characters are Vader and the Emperor.

I never said that was what I wanted. I have no idea why you'd think I did. I said it might be interesting to see a comedy series set in some hitherto-unexplored sidebar of the SW universe, or dealing with some of the comic-relief canonical characters in side adventures, perhaps like the old Droids series that Paul Dini wrote for, which was about some of the adventures that C3PO and R2D2 had during the years prior to A New Hope. Something that broadens the universe and reveals new facets of it the way The Clone Wars does, but in a lighter vein.

...and that's kind of the relevant distinction of a 'canon' Star Wars comedy. To be 'canon', it would need to fit. You could do a Star Wars comedy about Dexter's Diner or the Mos Eisely Cantina and make it like Cheers In Space. A TV show about a Rebel Hospital Ship that's basically MASH? Whatever. Many Star Wars characters could easily be used in such a comedy - Han Solo, naturally, could be trusted for a few zingers.

And yes, that's exactly the sort of thing I'm talking about (although not so derivative). Not a show about Hitler and Goebbels's wacky adventures, but (to continue the metaphor) something more like Hogan's Heroes or McHale's Navy -- or, for British viewers, Dad's Army or 'Allo, 'Allo! Something focusing on funny characters and situations happening off to the side of the main events.

Heck, I bet you could get a pretty funny series out of the misadventures of Han and Chewie prior to ANH.

I don't want a comedy show in canon. I believe that comedy can be derived from situations and character, as there are many funny scenes in Star Wars and many funny episodes of DS9, but in the end, I think these universes are about the mythology they are telling and actual storytelling.

Since this show is obviously outside of canon- and has a bit of self-referential bite, I'm all for it.

As for "cheapening the brand" of SW, yes it does. If anything that's what bugs me the most. But there are so many other things Lucas has done before this (not even the prequels) that have already done to cheapen it. Star Wars was most special to me during the bulk of the 16-year gap between ROTJ and TPM.

Honestly whether or not this is 'cheapening' the Star Wars brand to me will only matter if it's funny or not. The Robot Chicken episodes were funny, but I'm not sure if there's really enough material for a running TV series.

I never said that was what I wanted.

And I never said that humour has to clash with a believable, realistic premise. Mostly I was driving at that Robot Chicken's Star Wars spoofs were all metatextual so the series was presumably designed to be more of the same.

The CGI does kind of take away from the 'dicking around with old toys' animation that made Robot Chicken endearing... but on the other hand, I just like the CGI of this and the Clone Wars, so sue me.

Obviously the show is going to need to do different and more things with these characters. They've lifted Palpatine basically unchanged from his Robot Chicken incarnation, for example, but Leia as a conceited idol is clearly something they came up with so they could get more laughs out of the character.

perhaps like the old Droids series that Paul Dini wrote for,
That and Ewoks are pretty good examples in theory (though I don't think I ever saw them as a kid).

Heck, I bet you could get a pretty funny series out of the misadventures of Han and Chewie prior to ANH.
That could definitely work.

That's pretty much how I feel and like I said before, I like the prequels.

Once upon a time, the Star Wars movies were something special you got every 3 years; then there was the hope that you might get more some day. Then there was the special editions and finally the prequels. Wait, did I say finally? There was the short Clone Wars animated series. Then the CGI Clone Wars series. And Yoda and Vader appearing in silly adverts. And now this?

It just makes SW feel less special somehow. Somehow, if this was unlicenced, something like the Family Guy send-ups, it would be more tolerable. But I just feel a little sad that Lucas is allowing a SW send-up to be made on his watch and his brand.

Who says comedy can't be "actual storytelling?" Sure, certain types of comedy, types that are widely popular today, are more about spoof and pop-culture referencing and repeating simplistic gags over and over, but there's plenty of comedy that's great storytelling. Back to the Future is a comedy film, but it's one of the most masterful exercises of cinematic storytelling ever made, an amazingly well-structured script where every single line or event has importance. Young Frankenstein is a comedy, and to some extent a spoof, but it's a very well-told and heartfelt story that genuinely enriches the cinematic Frankenstein universe.

And I never said that humour has to clash with a believable, realistic premise. Mostly I was driving at that Robot Chicken's Star Wars spoofs were all metatextual so the series was presumably designed to be more of the same.

And that doesn't surprise me, but I still would've found it more interesting if they'd gone a different route.

I did feel the use of CGI made it come off as more generic than RC. And I'm not a fan of the character design style they're using.

Wait, this is actually a serious and sanctioned thing and not a piss poor attempt at Star Wars by some fanboys? :guffaw:

I'd rather shit in my hands and clap than watch this.

Looks like it would be good for anyone 9 years of age and younger though. If you're any older, you might have some serious problems.

Cha-Ching goes George Lucas.

I'll be honest, looking at the CGI-ed Han, Chewie and the Milennium Falcon kind of made me want a serious, Clone Wars-esque Han Solo animated series. Those Millennium Falcon interiors (best seen here) just look nice.

That reminded me of The Solo Adventures I wonder if it was made by any of the same people. I agree, I'd love an entire CGI animated series like this.

I thought the clip was hilarious. Will definitely be tuning in.

Interesting voice cast taking part. Felicia Day, Donald Faison, Weird Al, Joel McHale, and even Billy Dee to mention a few.

I'll be checking it out, if just to hear a few of the names above.

The funniest Star Wars ever got was The Star Wars Holiday Special. And that is unintentionally knee slapping.

Had no idea what this was or heard of it until I clicked on this thread. Pressed play on the video...

Fuck me. Use whatever meme you want but "what the fuck is this shit" came straight into my head. Had to turn it off after 10 seconds... fuck me.

I'll be watching the hell out of this!

Hey, this might be pretty good. 2-3 good gags in the first trailer (the matte painting, Amidala, Han Solo with the Indy hat), and the Chewie/Han trailer above is pretty funny despite hewing to a predictable routine. If this is done as a sketch show format, jumping quickly from one skit to the next, it might be a lot of fun. :techman:

^ Why not? I don't think he's too worried about saturating the market with Star Wars products. This seems right in line with the Star Wars Transformers line.

Wow...not what I expected...but I'm in. Obi-Wan's standup routine sold me. :rommie:

Was that blond guy sposed to be Luke?

Love the Looney Tunes landscapes! :bolian:
