Star Wars Books Thread

Oh, cool. I have to admit, I'm kind of torn on the Aftermath books, I've heard a lot of stuff about them that sounds interesting, but it seems like the majority of people didn't like them.
I have to admit, I am curious what the structure of Last Shot is going to be. Will get all of each time period at once, or will it jump back and forth?

Mediocre is probably the most apt description. The first one is a bit of a mess as it spends as much time on random, disconnected vignettes as it does on the main story, which is itself not all that memorable or interesting. The other two are a lot more coherent with more of an engaging story, but the main characters still seem lacking. Mr. Bones is always a treat though. ;)
It's never a good sign IMO when the most interesting parts of a book are it's references to, and world-building for, other parts of the franchise you'd much rather be reading/watching.

Yeah, that matches with the overall impression I've gotten from comments people have since they came out. One of these days I might just look around at the Wookiepedia entries for them.

I started the digital collection of the Obi-Wan and Anakin miniseries a couple days ago. Rebels got me in a Star Wars mood, and a prequel era story sounded good. I'm up to the third issue, and it's pretty good so far.

I was going to look at the Thrawn comic mini series, but its just an adaptation of the recent book. Why would I want to read what has to be a super abridged version of the book? I can't imagine that pictures compensate for all the lost story. It seems like a weird move, honestly.

I can see the appeal of getting something that was only in prose in a new visual format.

I didn't like that series very much (save for the flashbacks on Coruscant), but fair enough if you're liking it.

I don't think they're very good in and of themselves (although the ex-Imperial "loyalty officer" was a great character). There is some really interesting backstory for the sequel trilogy there, so I'd say it's worth reading for that, but just don't spend money on them.

It sounds like it'll jump around between three time periods.

I kinda agree; I do like the comic versions of the movies since they sometimes add new scenes, but despite becoming a "get everything that's Marvel canon Star Wars," I'm not really interested in it unless it turns out that there's new story stuff in it down the line.

They did a comic adaptation of Splinter of the Mind's Eye in the 90s.

Yeah, I guess. I'm not against it or anything, I'm just a bit disappointed that its not a new Thrawn story. As someone who liked the book, adapting it into a comic doesn't really appeal to me.

Dark Horse adapted the Heir to the Empire trilogy back in the 90s. I enjoyed them, even though I'd already read the novels (at that point, at least twice).

I don't see any downside to adapting Thrawn. Clearly, Marvel sees a market for it. If you don't want it, you don't have to buy it.

If given the choice between a new story and an adaptation, I'd definitely prefer a new story, but I can see the appeal of an adaptation.

Just in case anyone else is interested, the e-book version of the Ahsoka novel is currently only $1.99. I've been wanting to get it, and now I'm glad I hadn't gotten around to it yet.
