Star Wars Books Thread

Allegedly Lucas was upset with Luke and Mara, but that's just rumour.
I do recall reading his comment that is often used as "the books were never canon" debate. But, his statement was largely around "Luke doesn't get married," among other ideas the books explored that Lucas was not inclined to explore.

I read all of NJO, and while it went on too long, it was overall pretty good, at least I thought so. The only real exception to that was the book Traitor, easily the most rancid piece of shit ever published under the Star Wars banner and the book that made Jacen Solo the single worst character in the entire franchise. His entire character arc was horrible, and this, for me, made him irredeemable. Then he later killed my favorite SW character (Mara Jade) because the writers were losing their minds in the last few years of the EU (and I say that as someone who loves the old EU and still considers it the best version of the SW Universe), but it all goes back to Traitor.
Wow I think yours is the first negative reaction I've ever heard to Traitor.

From what I gather, Lucas's opinion of Mara could be summed up the same as his thoughts on the EU in general: total apathy and utter disinterest. He really didn't care either way.

This should be obvious given what he and others from LF have said over the years, but it was a persistent claim among the "EU is canon!" ride or dies that GL personally read and signed off on EVERYTHING published and licenced by the company, which of course of patently asinine. Hell I recall one particularly deluded bunch convinced that he was actually ghost-writing some of it, which is especially hilarious given that by his own admission he's a terrible writer.

I read the first 5 or 6 NJO books and thought they were pretty good. My biggest complaint is that so much time had passed, and they those books had gone so far off in their own direction, that they barely even felt like the Star Wars we got in the movies.

So I've found something on this. He didn't dislike the character per say, he just didn't like how she looked, specifically that she looked like she stepped out of an issue of Cosmopolitan. Though according to the woman they hired to use in live action images for various still media and such, he gave final approval of her look.

So who knows.

I doubt it, honestly.

I recall Pablo Hidalgo mentioning more than once that historically, a lot of decisions like this have been misattributed to GL himself at least partly because in reporting Lucasfilm was often shortened to just "Lucas", which understandably leads to confusion. So if a source claimed "Lucas signed off on <insert thing GL probably didn't care about here>" What probably actually happened was that is was the company, specifically the licencing division...even more specifically probably just some midlevel supervisor in said division. Meaning in all likelihood it never even came across George's desk.

I read about half of the NJO, and it was really my first foray into Star Wars novels. I never finished Traitor, but I did like how Jacen was handled for the most part in the other books. He overthought things too much and provided some nice balance if it didn't make his character the most dynamic. I really enjoyed Anakin Solo, which I guess was to be expected. But I loved the Yuuzhan Vong. I thought the world building with them was great.

Thinking about Jacen's arc, I felt he was handled worse in Legacy of the Force series when he made his Sith turn. I thought it started off great but after Mara's death and he gained his Sith name that's when it fell apart for me. They turned him into a cackling villain that was not very good despite the book blurbs blaring about how great he was. Foreshadowing of the sequels' Ben Solo.

Lucas was supposedly involved in the decision to switch Anakin and Jacen as protagonists of the NJO.

While I can believe this, it always seemed a little sus to me.

Not sure where else to post this and it doesn't seem worth it's own thread, but from what's being going around on twitter it looks like a LF holiday crew gift has leaked the existence of a heretofore unknown Star Wars project called "Tales of the Jedi". Previously this had been the umbrella for a series of comics in the 90's that were the first to delve into the Old Republic. What's interesting is that on said gift, this project's logo is listed among those of other known LF projects, all of which are know to be shows (animated or otherwise) or movies, or indeed anything on the publishing end. So it seems unlikely that this is a comic book thing as it was before. Plus it'd be weird to have such a seemingly similar initiative going out alongside "The High Republic."

I kinda hope it's a new animated anthology show, telling various standalone (and maybe a few connected) stories about Jedi from all eras. Maybe framed as literal tales in-universe so they can lean into the unreliable narrator aspect and not have to worry too much about continuity or painting other stories into corners. It might just be something to do with the KoTOR remake though.

With so little Jedi in the shows since Rebels ended, other than Visions, one focused entirely on Jedi could be fun.

I got this bad boy for Christmas. It’s freaking heavy. It must weigh about 10 pounds.

I think the Bantam books are fairly criticized for being too much about repeated Imperial super-weapons and characters flipping to Dark Side (and sometimes back) but the Del Rey books, while initially reducing the Imperials, seem pretty similar with that.

I started the Out Among The Stars, the 6th volume of Marvels no subtitle comic series, which written by Jason Aaron, Dash Aaron, and Jason Latour, with art by Salvador Laroca, Andrea Sorrentino, and Michael Walsh. I read all of the first issue in it, #33 last night, and I thought it was really good. It was a fun Luke & Leia story, with nice art.

The Princess and the Scoundrel by Beth Revis will be giving us a new, canon version of Han and Leia's wedding.
BLURB:
You are cordially invited to the wedding of Princess Leia Organa and Han Solo.

The Death Star is destroyed. Darth Vader is dead. The Empire is desolated. But on the forest moon of Endor, amongst the chaos of a changing galaxy, time stands still for a princess and her scoundrel.

After being frozen in carbonite, then risking everything for the Rebellion, Han is eager to stop living his life for other people. He and Leia have earned their future together, a thousand times over. And when he proposes to Leia, it’s the first time in a long time he’s had a good feeling about this. For Leia, a lifetime of fighting doesn’t truly seem over. There is work still to do, penance to pay for the dark secret she now knows runs through her veins. Her brother, Luke, is offering her that chance—one that comes with family and the promise of the Force. But when Han asks her to marry him, Leia finds her answer immediately on her lips . . . Yes.

But happily ever after doesn’t come easily. As soon as Han and Leia depart their idyllic ceremony on Endor for their honeymoon, they find themselves on the grandest and most glamorous stage of all: the Halcyon, a luxury vessel on a very public journey to the most wondrous worlds in the galaxy. Their marriage, and the peace and prosperity it represents, is a lightning rod for everyone in the galaxy—including Imperial remnants still clinging to power.

Facing their most desperate hour, the soldiers of the Empire have dispersed across the galaxy, retrenching on isolated worlds vulnerable to their influence. As the Halcyon travels from world to world, one thing becomes abundantly clear: The war is not over. But as danger draws closer, Han and Leia find that they fight their best battles not alone but as husband and wife.

The Courtship of Princess Leia was OK, definitely not one of the best of the Legends books, and I will be curious to see if this one is any better. I really liked Beth Revis's Rebel Rising, so I'm pretty confident this will be good.

Uh no.

Courtship of Princess Leia was and still is the best. Ill pass on this new Princess and Scoundrel novel which is just another stupid Disney forced retcon doover nonsene

The older version introduced us to Dathomir, but that has changed a bit since The Clone Wars came out. Gave us a few other things that have not returned to canon.

Though I fully expect the married couple to take out at least an Imperial Star Destroyer on the honeymoon.

I wouldn't mind an Undercover Blues style Solo/Organa married couple story.
