star wars back to marvel

I don't see Marvel producing anywhere near the quality of what Dark Horse has been doing. I don't see them having the same vested interest as the "smaller" company.

This news does not come as a shock at all, but if Disney showed any sense of stewardship for the franchise they would have at least worked out a co-production deal with Dark Horse I think.

On the Dark Horse side, I hope they haven't put too many eggs in this particular basket. They have a talented crew there and should be putting their energy into completing original material.

If Disney was evil... They would poach all to most of Dark Horse Star Wars' authors and artists, and bring them on board over to Marvel, crippling Dark Horse and increasing market Share.

IDW just lost the Doctor Who License.

Without Star Wars, Dark Horse would have a lot of money to bid on that practically insignificant product.

I knew this was going to happen sooner or later, but I'm still bummed about it. I've been following Dark Horse's Star Wars comics since Tales of the Jedi started twenty years ago. They've put out a lot of great stuff over the years. Granted, there were some duds, too, but I think generally there was far more good than bad. And their comics have been vastly superior to Del Rey's novel line for years now.

I kind of hope that Marvel might consider bringing over some of the people who worked on Star Wars for Dark Horse (namely John Ostrander and Jan Duursema), but I highly doubt it will happen. Most likely they'll discard everything Dark Horse did and start fresh with an OT-centric series leading up to Episode VII.

They might, but as Guy said that would be truly evil to Dark Horse. The noble thing to do would be create a joint DH/Marvel venture in the comics.

I think Titan Comics has already snatched up the Doctor Who license.

I think Marvel will pick up where they originally left off with post-Episode VI Luke, Han, & Leia. What would have been issue #108 will now be issue #1 of a new ongoing title that'll have plenty of Easter Eggs towards Episode VII and beyond.

Personally, I doubt we'll see stuff that will focus on non-established characters and eras that Dark Horse did (like Tales of the Jedi, Crimson Empire, Dawn of the Jedi and Legacy).

Star Wars (Disney if their lawyers are worth a damn) owns the intellectual rights to the stories and characters that Dark Horse invented and shepherded, even if Dark Horse probably maintains the reprint rights for their comics... But marvel should be able to do what ever the hell it wants with any of the characters that have only ever been used by Dark Horse.

Yeah - we kinda thought it would have been announced sooner if it was going to happen.

No, I think the timing is about right. When Disney bought Lucasfilm and the Dark Horse question came up at the time, Dark Horse stated that their license was through 2014. I think the writing was always on the wall for Dark Horse, but it never made any sense for Disney to announce they were pulling the plug any sooner than they had to.

If anything, this makes the transition easier at the end of the year, because everyone knows that Dark Horse is winding down and Marvel can hit the ground with their plans in early 2015 because they've had time to prepare.

Not at all surprised to hear this, but I am disappointed. Dark Horse has done a great job, and it's a shame to see that come to an end. I do trust Marvel to give us good stuff, but I doubt it will be to the same volume. They have so much other stuff that would be a priority for them, that I don't see them spending a ton of money and energy on SW.

Given how Marvel treated the Crossgen and Disney Afternoon properties that Disney gave them, it's doubtful SW will fare better at Marvel than it did under DH's aegis.

Why does everyone get so hung up on the green rabbit? The Marvel series also brought us The "Wheel Saga", Valance the Bounty Hunter, The House of Tagge, The Tarkin, Hoojibs!, Shira Brie/Lumiya, "Captain Drebble" and other really fun stuff.

Comic books are about old men grasping at their childhoods.

Has Star Wars Comics ever sold well?
"Well" in what terms? No, they've paled in comparison to Marvel and DC's flagship titles. (Though even those pale in comparison to the crowds who go to see the movies.)

But they've sold well enough for Dark Horse to keep producing them for 20+ years, which means there is - or at least was - a healthy market out there for them.

(I am reasonably certain that Episode VII is going to make me annoyed and swear off the novels and comics in the new setting. Now I understand where the Abramstrek haters are coming from. ;))
