RIP Jim Shooter

From CBR

"Jim Shooter, the iconic comic book writer and former Marvel Editor-in-Chief, has passed away at the age of 73, according to comic book writer Mark Waid. Waid shared that Shooter had been suffering from esophageal cancer for several years.
Shooter began his legendary career at just 14 years old, writing for DC’s Adventure Comics. He would go on to shape the industry with iconic contributions—penning the first Superman/Flash race and later launching Marvel’s Secret Wars, one of the bestselling comics of the 1980s.
"

I remember reading Secret Wars as a teen and some of his Legion of Superheroes tales as a kid. IIRC he was EiC at Marvel when I started collecting in '79. Started with Thor, several reprint titles featuring the FF, then added Uncanny X-Men, Moon Knight, Defenders, Rom from what I remember. I remember in the 90's he was behind several comics comapnies, Defiant, Valiant and I think Broadway Comics. Hard to believe we lost another big name so soon after Peter David.

The behind the scenes stuff and the final weeks of the Shooter era seemed pretty volatile, but man was that an amazing time for comics. I was at just the right age when I discovered Marvel and it was when Shooter was in charge. The Phoenix Saga wouldn't have hit as hard without him. So many great books at the time: Fantastic Four, X-Men, Daredevil, Hulk, not to mention Secret Wars, all were doing it for me. He helped make my awful teen years so much better.

He was second only to Stan Lee for making me love Marvel.

RIP Jim.

His era at Marvel is my favorite era of Marvel hands down. Nothing else, even Stan and Jack, is close.

I met him a couple of times in the 80s and saw him again at a con a few years ago. Possibly the nicest pro towards the fans I ever met Willing to engage with them for hours. RIP

An absolute legend of the industry, although not without his own problems and controversies. Definitely helped Marvel stabilize in a turbulent era, but not without creating different problems on occasion.

RIP Jim Shooter

SECRET WARS was certainly chock-full of realism, no more so when Magneto suddenly decided to fall in love with the Wasp. I did dig it when the Wrecking Crew tried to waste Thor, but I'm quite vexed that until now (this line), his spectacular AVENGERS run with at least 16 cliffhangers, was even less acknowledged than Dean Devlin in MOON 44. I also dug his 1970s LEGION stories.
