Star Trek XII Release Date & Box Office Discussion Thread

Maybe, but Trek was a reboot, not really a sequel. it took a franchise with a huge and loyal following, but was so tightly restricted by itself, not much more could be done with it, and opened it back up. I don't see Ice Age and Madagascar having the same following and fan quality as Star Trek.

From the perspective of people who don't want to watch Trek it probably doesn't matter whether its a reboot or sequel, just as how no matter what they do with whatever franchises you and I may not like, it's still not something we're going to care for or want to watch.

And "fan quality" isn't what really drives the industry since Hollywood is a business, and if a crappy movie can sell $900 million in tickets, they'll make decision accordingly. Trek has great fans, but Trek XI did not succeed because of Trek fans. It was a success because of the general movie audience (the same who make stuff like Ice Age and every other big movie a success) who were attracted by the film for whatever reasons.

And that's just it. "Whatever reasons" they went and saw Ice Age and Madagascar. Why pay 12 bucks at a movie theater to see an animation comedy, which is hardly worth it, when i could wait for the DVD release and rent it for 3 bucks. that kind of movie isnt really a "must see in theaters" movie, nor is the experiance that much better. now, action movies, and that sort of thing are better in theaters, and i would pay to see them there. but Ice Age and Madagascar? no. but i guess theres an audience for them.

That's just your opinion. For most people, seeing any movie in a theatre is a bigger experience than watching it at home. Animated films can be just as visually spectacular as any action movie can be (e.g. Wall-E, How To Train Your Dragon, etc.).

In any case, this now has nothing to do with your original contention that they shouldn't make these movies. The fact is they do, and they make tons of money.

Back to the main topic, it looks like Twilight: Breaking Dawn 2 will open in Summer 2012, and based on Eclipse, it will probably be in June.

I think they will be fed up of it by then!

Doubtful, especially since its the final film in the series. New Moon made $710 million worldwide, coming off Twilight's $408 million. There's been no signs of the franchise slowing down with ticket pre-sales going up Thursday and it is one of the most anticipated movies of the summer (not by me since I refuse to watch any of them).

Side Note: "Iron Man 2" knocked "Star Trek" out of the Top 50 Highest Grossing Films list.

Another side note: This May sucks in terms of movies and box office.

Looking at the schedule one page back...I predict Trek 12 will get it's ass handed to it it's 2nd weekend by Spider-man, purely on the relative strengths of the franchises.

Man, I hope Twilight: Breaking Dawn 2 doesn't open near Trek XII. Eclipse made about as much on it's opening day (a Wednesday!!!!) as Trek XI did for it's 3-day weekend.

I guess I shouldn't be surprised at how bat-shit crazy girls are for Twilight at this point, but still, $69 million?!?!

Never underestimate the power of stupid people in large groups.

And pray the Paramount execs don't try to get in on some of that sweet Twilight money by reaiming Trek at teenage girls.

Emo Kirk. Brooding Spock. Vampire Uhura.
:barf:

Say what you will about how stupid/bad the movies may be, but don't call their fans "stupid people". For one thing, they are readers, which is probably better than 90% of the rest of the population who are too lazy to pull themselves away from their TV or the internet. And second, just because they're passionate about it doesn't make them any more stupid than we all are for caring so much about Trek.

IF Only... We had that kinda draw for Trek.

There'd still be a show on TV!

Paramount bought the Ninja Turtles franchise? Huh, didn't see that one coming. Warner Bros. had it previously, yes? I wonder why they sold it... 2007's TMNT did solid business, I thought.

Regardless, I look forward to a new TMNT film (well, as long as it looks halfway decent, that is). I didn't realize how much money the first film made back in 1990 -- I knew it had been big, but that's really quite incredible. I remember going to see it (possibly for the second time) on my 7th birthday... ah, memories. :)

Me too! And I loved the cartoon when I was little.... meaning late eighties, early nineties. :techman:

John Carter of Mars just moved from 6/8 to 3/9, which is good since one less sci-fi film coming out close to Trek. Not that it would necessarily have much of an effect anyway, but any less competition is better.
