Star Trek XII Release Date & Box Office Discussion Thread

In the time Avatar has been out the only two other 'big' movies are Sherlock Holmes and The Chipmunks.... imagine how many other movies there would have been in Summer.

Star Trek and summer doesn't work for me and it never will.

Weren't TWOK and TSFS summer releases? I know for a fact TFF was because it came out in the midst of the biggest box-office summer in recent history what with BATMAN, INDY 3, HONEY I SHRUNK THE KIDS, GHOSTBUSTERS 2 and other megahits being released at almost exactly the same time. A good part of the reason why TFF flopped was because of horrible timing and squaring off against a sea of often-superior blockbusters with better scripts.

Looks like Star Trek XII's release date just got screwed. Sony has slotted the Spider-man reboot for July 3, 2012, just five days after the June 29, 2012 release date of Trek XII. While Trek would have one weekend to itself, it will now have to compete with a massive blockbuster going into the 4th of July holiday.

I'm betting Trek will move (especially since Spider-man is going to be in 3-D), but we'll see.

Yeah, I think its release date will likely change -- it would certainly be a good idea. I'm not completely sure how audiences will respond to the rebooted Spidey franchise, but I'm willing to bet it'll still have a sizable opening, which could definitely hurt Trek at the box office.

I also notice that the new Spider-Man is opening on a Tuesday... how atypical.

The New Spider-man film won't be no where near as big as the others. Trek will smash it easily domestic.

However i feel Trek should move to Early June or Winter now. For a better over-seas gross

It depends.

The reboot might open lower than SM3's $151 million, it will still open big since it will have a 6-day opening with probably no big competition. If the movie is poorly received like SM3, it will burn out quick, but if it's good/decent, it will have better legs.

Star Trek XII will almost definitely open bigger than XI, but it also still needs to be good to get as much repeat business as XI received.

When will they get on with writing the script for Trek XII and I think rebooting Spiderman is a bad idea Sony are idiots

After SPIDEY 3's lame-ass plot I can see putting a fourth movie on-hold for a little longer while the kinks in the franchise get worked out...but rebooting it all after just three movies and less than one full decade? What are they thinking?

Oh, that's right. They're not.

One partial reason is that if they don't make a movie, the rights revert back to Marvel/Disney. It's why Fox is rebooting Daredevil.

Let Kevin Smith write and direct that one. One or both. Frankly, the first DAREDEVIL was pure shite. And after Smith bailed on the Green Hornet project five years ago I think he still deserves a shot at helming and/or penning a superhero adventure.

What happened to the thread about Star Trek XII rumors, news, casting, etc.?

I wanted to post this there but will post it here instead.

Simon Pegg: "Star Trek 2 could start shooting later this year!"

Simon Pegg, who played Scotty in the Star Trek reboot, has told Empire magazine that he's been hassling director J.J. Abrams about a production start date for a sequel.

"I bug J.J. on a regular basis and he just fobs me off,” said Pegg. “But I saw Zoe Saldana recently and she reckons that it's going to be soon. I would imagine it'll be toward the end of the year, but I can't guarantee it," said the actor.

Smith didn't do Green Hornet because he can't do and doesn't want to do a big movie.

True. Though the fact he was open-minded about it for as long as he was shows that with the right script and superhero he could still say "yes" to another project at a future date.

^
F*** you for that one.

    :guffaw:

You'll burn in hell for pulling that stunt. Boooo!!!
