Star Trek tops $200 million

"Star Trek" is currently the #1 film of 2009 with $200,350,000.

Though I'm not remotely going to argue that the film wasn't successful... Dude... it's fargin' MAY still. Isn't a bit too early to crown the king when there's more than half the year left? :P

Well, it is the top movie of the year at the moment, and the first movie since last July to make $200 million. It won't be the #1 movie after Transformers 2 comes out, but it's a nice thing to celebrate.

More great news! I'm hoping it will get to 250 mil, myself. Nice round number and all. ;)

As for it's competition, I believe Harry Potter is serious competition...but Transformers? Not as much. Transformers is most definitely a 'guy movie' sort of thing. Girls will go watch Star Trek...and girls will go watch Harry Potter...but the only girls who will go and watch Transformers are girls who get dragged by their boyfriends.

As girl scfi fans go, I'm reasonably serious - I try just about all the new scifi TV shows, saw all the LOTR, Matrix, Harry Potter, and PotC movies, etc... Went to see most of the X-Men movies, the Spidermans, etc. Even went to see Watchman (although admittedly it was mainly for Jeffrey Dean Morgan :p ). But I have no interest at all in going to see Transformers.

Hey, I'm a girl and I didn't need to be dragged to see Transformers.

me two..

i really wasnt into the transformer cartoon that much but i just wasnt watching a lot of cartoons during that period.

did grow up playing with hot wheels and stuff like that in between putting together different fashion statements for my barbies.

I grew up with (b&w) 60s versions of Stingray, Thunderbirds, Astroboy, Jetsons, Flintstones, Huckleberry Hound, Rocky and Bullwinkle. We didn't get colour tv until 1975 when I was 15. Ditto on the Barbies until I was about 10 (1970).

I'm 27. So I watched Transformers and GI Joe as a kid, but I'm not so hyped about Transformers 2. And GI Joe looks kinda dumb. I will see Transformers 2 for sure though. If it's a good movie, I won't mind a second sequel. I just wish Megatron had a bit more personality.

I've girlfriends who're eagerly anticipating Transformers but won't watch Trek so... *shrugs*

And that's why Voodoo used the qualifier "currently."

Funny, I have girlfriends who are the exact opposite.

And I paraphrase, "Give me Chris Pine over Shia LeBouef any day."

Sentiments I agree with, of course :)

Our 16yo daughter doesn't mind either of them:guffaw:

-- TWOK was sixth in 1982 (the year ET made over $300 million). Tootsie was second, then An Officer and a Gentleman, Rocky III, and Porky's
I remember Tootsie and Gandhi competing for Best Picture that year; Gandhi won -- didn't it make money?

With any luck, the next Harry Potter will bomb and Star Trek will be the best selling movie for 2009
Both Transformers and Harry Potter will almost certainly make more money the Star Trek.

Maybe Harry Potter, but I doubt Transformers will do better. For one thing, it doesn't have the multi-generational appeal of Star Trek. If part of the movie hadn't been filmed outside of buildings I work in, I probably would have passed on this movie. I will be seeing it only to see how the scenes filmed at my workplace turned out. There's no way I'll see it more than once, though. (I've seen Star Trek 13 times.)

I don't think that argument works considering the first one made $319 million domestic and $700 million worldwide. It out-performed all of the HP films, unadjusted.

I'm sure there's somebody out there who's been every day.

My eyes literally couldn't take that; I have dyslexia and have to rest up between trips.

Err, you do realize that Transformers has been going regularly for 25 years now, right? That's multi-generational to be sure. It's up to Star Trek's length? No.. but it's nothing to scoff at, either.

I have a question: Since Avatar is due for a Christmas release, will most of its take be in 2010? or does it count for the year in which it is released?
Will it really be competing with ST09 this year?

It's all based on year of release. Otherwise, it'd get confusing.
