Why? Why can't you serve your sentence and be released without embracing Logic? This is a violation of basic rights. It's like being told you have to repent and accept Jesus as your Saviour or you aren't getting out.
Vulcans, for all their talk of infinite diversity in infinite combinations, are frequently depicted as intolerant dicks stuck in their ways instead of being open-minded and adaptable.

That's why, for all their intelligence, they're not very socially adaptable or at ease around other cultures. It wasn't until Valeris that a Vulcan graduated at the top of their Academy class. That's why Vulcans still operate Starfleet ships that are entirely or mostly crewed by Vulcans (USS Intrepid in TOS, USS Hera in TNG ((Geordi's mother's ship had a mostly Vulcan crew)), and USS T'Kumbra in DS9). That's why Spock and his mother experienced so much bigotry and discrimination and why the USS T'Kumbra's captain was a bigot towards humans.

That's why Vulcans are so discriminatory against other Vulcans who won't accept the way of Surak and live a life of logic. If you're not a criminal you are allowed to remain but as a second-class citizen who wouldn't be accepted to the Vulcan Science Academy, the Vulcan Defense Force, or into government. The moment you commit a crime though they're only too willing to put you behind bars where they can "rehabilitate" you, which is more like forced indoctrination because it's the only option available to you if you want to secure an early release.

It's a paranoid remnant from their near-apocalyptic civil war against "those who march beneath the Raptor's wings" AKA what would become the Romulans over 2,000 years ago. Even the more egalitarian Spock immediately adopted a "kill it with fire" approach just like the bigoted Stiles the moment he found out the Romulans were an ancient offshoot of the Vulcan's aggressive colonialist period.

In a way it's similar to how Humans and the Federation they heavily influence have an over-the-top prohibition against genetic engineering that even extends to members of other species serving in Starfleet, all because of their experience in the Eugenics Wars hundreds of years ago.

I must admit, I'm a bit baffled by the gender identity thing with Aspen/Angel. They cast a woman who uses she/her pronouns to play a non-binary character who uses they/them? Why not hire a non-binary actor for this non-binary role? Or present the character as a transwoman once they cast this actress?

And within the plot, was the real Dr. Aspen also non-binary? Or was Captain Angel a female character assuming a non-binary cover identity?

Performance-wise, I LOVED her as Dr. Aspen and thought she was not as good as Captain Angel -- but Dr. Aspen was also written better than Captain Angel, so not really her fault.

And I still basically liked the performance -- Angel seems set up to recur and I am here for it.

I mean, the outfits alone -- A+ to costumes for everything Jesse James Keitel wore in this episode.

No, M'Benga was there, briefly. He was in the cell with Pike, Una, La'an, and Ortegas.

Jesse was great. I knew her work from Big Sky but she was on a whole different level here, chewing scenery like it was potato chips. Definitely need to bring her back, regardless of pronouns. Probably my favorite new character of the series.

Just watched this one. Only 8 and 9 to watch now. It was alright. I guessed the Captain Angel twist very early on, but it was great to see more Spock/Chapel/T’Pring.

One of the seasons weaker episodes, but for SNW then a weaker episode is stil not bad.

I realise that the Enterprise being captured was a thing in TOS but this seemed very easy, even if she still only has 200 odd crew at this point, they must have vastly outnumbered the pirates. How many people could one ship transport in such a short window?

This is the only gambit that has any hope of success in the Enterprise Incident (piggybacking on an existing transporter signal) but I don't like all this beaming onto other ships without transporter pads witout instantlytriggering Intruder Alert alarms like in TMP. If it was this easy, counter-measures would have been put in place at the same time as the transporters (such as diverting incoming signals to the transporter room or the brig - we know interception of signals is possible and we know that deactivating weapons is possible).

It was fun but very sloppy.

Shout out to Chapel's talent with a hypospray from TOS. They have been really clever in developing a story that plugs the plot hole in Naked Time regarding Chock. T'Pring is great. Loving the return of a certain other Vulcan too.

Needs of the plot.

I'm sure you could probably apply for citizenship on another world or a regular judicial system punishment for your crimes but this is how Vulcan's runs.

Vulcan retained its cultural autonomy after joining the Federation. It's a society run on logic. They almost nuked themselves into extinction 2,000 years ago due to emotion so they're not likely to just let you out of a rehabilitation program unless you agree to certain terms of behavior.

That's just what Vulcan post-Surak is.

In Trek universe, Andor, Tellar, Alpha Centauri and Vulcan agreed to let Earth be the de facto H.Q of the new UFP as long as those pesky humans kept their noses out of their business. Earth considered it a fair trade, in return they would get their hands on a warp 6 engine.
Starfleet leaped for joy at the news

I got the impression that you could but it wouldn't be in the rehabilitation center. T'Pring works for an organization that offers an alternative to regular prison. Or so it seemed to be implied by her associate. They are proselytizing, they are a bit holier-than-thou but the criminal has the right to accept the offer of "return to logic" or not. That's the offer that was presented to Bajor whatshisface. He said nope, because the human company you keep grosses me out. But he was still going to prison because he committed a crime. Just not Ankeshtan K'til. I imagine that a lot of the Vulcan people who committed crimes would not consider themselves to be a "vulcan without logic" and might welcome a way to get out of regular prison by accepting rehabilitation.

In Sybok's case it gets all fuzzy though. He's there under an assumed name, either by his choice or... Does T'Pring know who he is? Is he tricking them for some nefarious reason? Is he there to get followers? Did he go there because he actually wants to get all logicky again? Is he being held against his will in secret without any other authorities knowing? Is this something Sarek did?

Alpha Braga IV?!? Well, I guess Brannon Braga did have a tendency to play with people's heads (as my autographed copy of his TNG: "Phantasms" script will attest).

I will say that at times, I could hear Marina Sirtis in the back of my mind, in character as Troi, telling me that "Aspen's hiding something."

All in all, this was some much-needed "lightening up" after ". . . Where Suffering . . . ."

Then again, the entire second season of PIC would lighten things up after ". . . Where Suffering . . . ."

But it fits so well with Pike playing with the pirate crew's heads.

Though I'll admit that sometimes a cake is just a cake. Even when it's a cellular peptide cake, with mint frosting.

Oh, I almost forgot: the annoyingly lamentable trend lately of treating all adult Vulcans as Kohlinaru, or as aspiring to Kohlinar, rather than treating Kohlinaru as exceptions (which had been at least tacitly the case in canon, and very explicitly the case in TrekLit)
