Star Trek: Starships Model/Magazine Subscription

I've had them all at one point. The playmates one was the Orinoco ( with a badly sculpted front cockpit/windows), the micro machine was the Rio grande, and the hallmark ornament (probably one of best versions out there) was the Rio Grande too.

No love for the Ganges though :D

tidbits from one of the dudes on the facebook fan group who attended the london comic con this weekend:
- Klingon Raider is shipped with its plastic wings packed separately, you just pop 'em into slots; the ship's body is mainly metal and is very heavy; comes with a stand but is also designed for display without one

- XL Runabout is very light, mostly plastic

- STSS line has ships and assets created for 180 standard issues but ship toolings have only been created for "Not many past 160", so far. If 180 doesn't happen, these models could be released as bonus issues but no commitments were made for either line, at this time; But EM was very clear that even if the numbered collection ends, Star Trek ships will continue. Don't freak if it does end.

- STSS Special and XL editions will carry on, regardless of the future status of the numbered collection

- The paint seen on the Scimitar proto will have an additional dark detail wash applied when it goes into production; expected to debut at retail at the end of August

- No ETA for the Planet of the Titans Enterprises or JJ background ships but they're being worked on; no info on TAS ships; the Titans and Franz Joseph ships are still in legal wrangles

- ISS Charon might have a light too, like the Doomsday Machine

- Next station was teased. Not confirmed. Hint: Not from the movies, so not Regula One I'm afraid. This does not preclude it being made in the future, however.

- Next shuttle set is tooled up; likely includes standard canon shuttles, without JJ or alien ships (which might come in later packs)

- XL Akira's engines have been fixed and it'll ship out soon

- Forthcoming ships from ST: Picard were re-confirmed; Yes, the show has Ships in it. Not just a Vineyard.

- Ships from The Expanse are not on EM's slate, at the moment. Neither are ships from Stargate.

- Forthcoming BSG collection ships: Colonial One, Blackbird, Battlestar Valkyrie.

- Alien collection: Derelict, then the Colonial Marines APC; The Betty and Prometheus are up after that but the order of their release is unclear.

- Finally: another collection of...things are coming soon. I like the sound of it. You might too.

most interesting stuff to me:
  • standard collection looks to be ending, but ships will still be produced, including specials
  • kelvin timeline fleet ships are still a possibility
  • ISS charon may be lit
  • star trek: picard will have its own collection (meaning there are enough ships in the show to support one)
  • XL akira class is back on track to ship out soon

Most of the promotional photos I’ve seen had the U.S.S. Thunderchild name printed on for the XL. I wonder if they’ve gone back to leaving it off or if that’s part of the paint errors.

While I realize it’s more screen accurate to leave it off, I’d prefer to have it on for this one.

Probably figured they get a better return on selling ships individually out of the shop than screwing around with the subscription service.

I wonder what station?

Caretaker array? Or perhaps the redressed regula station used as the staging ground for retaking DS9.

i’d prefer it too, hope it’s one of the errors but i am doubtful. we’ll see soon.

given how vague they’re being, i wonder if it’s the vanguard station from the novels. or maybe it’s the discovery starbase which they announced last year.

I just picked up Baran's raider today. (I prefer to think of it as the Miradorn ship, though).

Looking at it in the box, I assumed it would be heavy and predominantly die-cast, but this one comes close to the Andorian ship in how light it is. The detailing is very good. I've mentioned more than once, when looking at the Micro Machine version, how much this one looks like a rotisserie chicken. This one doesn't look quite as much like one, but I can still see a bit of it. The outer "pincers" also tilt down a bit, so this version isn't as flat as the Micro Machine was.

All in all, a good model of a mean looking alien ship. I admit, I'm a lot more excited for the next ship in the collection, the long-awaited Jem'Hadar battleship, and the USS Antares a bit after that.

Just got the Merchantman today- wonderfully large and well detailed. The wash is a bit too heavy on the underside of the warp-wings obscuring some detail but easy enough to fix.
The accompanying book only half covered the subject, the rest was about the ST3 special effects in general, nothing new there.

Sad to see the subscription line come to an end but my wallet and bookshelves will be thankful!

Still can't believe the sheer amount of ships, both easily recognizable & more obscure, that they produced. There were very few that I just went :ack: over and have really enjoyed collecting these. I hope the XL continues for awhile going forward.

I finally got a response from Eaglemoss about the Spacedock order I ordered 6 months ago but never received. Apparently they are not making it anymore and I will get a refund. I don’t get why they would stop making that model. I’ll have to get it on eBay I suppose

What?? Not making it anymore? Shit!

Off to eBay while they're still affordable...

I wonder if there are any others that are quietly being discontinued.

If they're stopping the subscription line, they'll all be discontinued.

Shame, I wanted Spacedock but never got it either.

They probably won’t all be discontinued, but a lot of the random alien ships-of-the-week likely will.

Annoying about Spacedock, yet another fuckover to subscribers.

i really don't think anything will be discontinued, the run looks like it'll end after 180 (which is significantly more issues than planned) and then unnumbered issues will continue to be released outside of the subscription format. they must be weighing the benefits of keeping the regular subscription going versus allowing it to end and continue selling what they do have without the expense of creating new toolings, not completely stopping production.

they've pretty much exhausted the catalogue of ships people would actually buy. ending the bi-weekly subscription makes sense to me.
