hero collector has high quality pics of the kerala and disco BOP up:

kerala looks a little on the bland side and i can't see any transparent parts, which you'd expect for at least the bussards. maybe there's transparent parts in the nacelles i'm just not seeing, but it's a bit of a surprise given the high quality of the discovery ships so far.

we all have our feelings about the bird of prey, but i think this is a damn impressive model. the blue is really interesting and that paint job is pretty remarkable.

Yeah the Kerala is the one of the most basic & generic Starfleet ship designs I think anyone could come up with. "Right let's design this... circle saucer... little thing at the back.. nacelles attached... And we're done."

It doesn't look bad at all, I'm just not interested.
I haven't got a new ship for a while actually, the Yeager was the last one. I think Alice is out this week isn't in shops, will probably pick that one up having skipped the last two.

i really love the kerala/gagarin design (wish they'd gone with the gagarin markings because they're more in line with discovery's but what are you gonna do?).

the problem is that it's generic and bland because it's not a hero digital asset but it's being treated like a hero ship by eaglemoss. they're being faithful to a quick and dirty digital model, so the display model looks quick and dirty itself.

I wish I could afford the Discovery ships. And that they fit in size-wise with the main line. I love a lot of the (Starfleet) designs.

I hate almost all the klingon designs on DIS. All their starships are flat. They are essentially 2D-models with details on top and bottom.

THIS ship is the exception! And it's a fucking delight. It looks amazing.

My only problem is that it has fuck-all to do with klingons: They usually had a more brutalistic design language, where form followed function even more than on Federation vessels. Where are the warp nacelles? Where are the weapon ports? The impulse engines? Why isn't there even a single window on this ship?

Again: This ship is something completely new and different. It could have been designed by H.R. Giger. It looks evil. And completely, utter alien. It's a GREAT design! I really, really, REALLY wish they would have simply introduced a new, much more alien species than the klingons to use it, though!

I received my second Discovery ship a few weeks ago, the U.S.S. Discovery. Overall, very pleased with this model. A little smaller than I expected given how big the Shenzou was, but nonetheless I love the model.

That being said, I did noticed once of the nacelles was split towards the end. I emailed Eaglemoss some pics and asked for a replacement, which they promptly sent without hassle. The replacement arrived yesterday. However, my happiness turned to disappointment pretty quickly.

The replacement model had (IMO) bigger issues than the first model they sent. The rings of the saucer sections are uneven/lopsided because the model wasn't assembled properly, or it was somehow warped. This gives the saucer section an uneven appearance if you are looking at the model head on. It also caused quite a noticeable gap at the joint where the diecast neck of the model meets the plastic rings. The deflector dish antennae was also broken. I sent eaglemoss another email and some pics this morning.

Has anyone ever had to ask for a replacement for a defective/broken replacement? I just feel weird asking them to send me a third one. I mean, I feel like if I'm spending about $50 for a ship, it shouldn't have such noticeable problems, but at the same time I feel like an ass asking for another ship.

Take a utility knife & some model glue and fix it yourself?
You have two models. Take one apart. You can try to re-assemble it yourself. You can swap the defect parts from one ship to the other, and build a "perfect" one out of the correctly assembled parts.

But try taking it apart and putting together out on only one of the models first, and see if you can make it work - worst case you still will have the other half-way decent model untouched. And definitely take "before" pictures of your replacement just in case.

Starting to love the new Klingon Bird of Prey now. Looked like just a piece of fluff on the show (what a waste of a nice model) but in detail it's quite something. I notice new things every time. For example I now believe I can see an actual face at the head of the ship.

Huh...is that a secondary bridge on the top of the Kerala between the wings? Looks the right size.
Does look that. A screw up or something left over from the Shenzhou?

No but it's quality control problems like this that have put me off getting more models. You would think after sending you a defective model that they would check that the next one they send you would be OK this time.

I did try to fix it myself, but the actual parts on the model are warped and ill fitting. I've "touched up" a few eaglemoss models they have sent me in the past, and I am ok with minor flaws. But in both cases with the Discovery models, the flaws were quite glaring. And the ship looks really odd with a tilted saucer section. I've applied as much force and pressure as I can to try and make the die cast and plastic parts fit properly. I even tried to wiggle the rings into a somewhat level orientation, and it just isn't possible. If I attempt the fix it further, the model is simply going to break.

:shrug:I think the Kerala looks awesome and I can't wait for the model. Did we get pictures of the underside of the model yet? Loved that part in the show.

@CommanderTrip, my Discovery model has the same issues. A split nacelle and the saucer being misaligned/tilted. I did entertain the thought of asking for a replacement, but decided that you can't really see the issues unless you are looking for them.

Huh? Interesting....
I never had that problem. The single parts were usually perfect - they are factory molded after all. The only problem is that they were often glued together incorrectly - say, at wrong angles, or with widening slits between the parts.

The biggest challenge is usually cracking the model apart, without damaging the single molds. That's what the utility knife is sorely needed for. Glueing them together correctly afterwards is usually childs' play (- good superglue provided).

If there are only minor deviations I usually don't touch them up. But if you already have a replacement? I would go full risk and completely take apart one(!) model, and reassemble the components myself again.

Can you maybe post pictures of your defect models?
