Star Trek: Starships Model/Magazine Subscription

I’m not a collector for collecting’s sake. But I’m a Trek-ship lover. So I’ll get them all. I’ve been waiting since childhood for some of these ships as physical models.

Agreed. That’s pretty much the same reason I’ve been getting them. I remember obsessing over the Wolf 359 for example & it still blows my mind that we’re getting models of those.

In other news the XL Enterprise A is up on the US XL subscription site but not the normal site yet. It lists an expected ship date of around June 15th.

Not sure if the pics are anything new we haven’t seen.

I picked up the Klingon Augment ship today from my local store. (I was hoping for the Bozeman, but they just got in the Freedom class, so I figure it's gonna be about another month for that). I believe it's the last Klingon ship in the series (apart from the specials) that I didn't have yet.

This particular shade of green looks a bit more Romulan, but other than that, I think they did a great job. It's a neat little vessel. The magazine says the audience (and presumably the characters) weren't supposed to be aware that it was a Klingon ship yet, but I high doubt many viewers were fooled (even setting aside the familiar Bird-of-Prey shape, we were already into the internet age and most people probably already knew that the episode was about). This was one of John Eaves' last ship designs for the show, and I wonder, had the show gone a full seven seasons, whether we would've seen this design again like the 22nd C. Bird of Prey and the D5 class, or if it would've been a one-shot like the Raptor class and Goroth's transport.

I'm seriously thinking about putting all my Klingon ships on one row on my shelf. I think I have almost enough for that (though they may end up having to share with the Romulans).

I think it depends what kinda Star Trek fan you are. Some people may watch all (or most of) the shows/movies, enjoy them, probably seen a fair few more than once. And are a fan of them. But that's basically it.

Then there's people like me who do the above, but also collected all 300+ issues of the Star Trek Fact Files back in the day for example. And think of all those years spent pouring over those ship layout and pictures. People who buy the encyclopaedias, novels, tie in guide books, video games, comics, etc. Look at websites like Memory Alpha and Ex Astris Scientia and can't get enough of ship charts, size comparisons, articles about the making of the Wolf 359 aftermath scene, the DS9 Frankenstein fleet, looking at pictures of how the models were put together.
I haven't even read any of the Titan or Aventine books, but still know what those ships are and look like and wanted the models of them.

So I see fans like the former commenting sometimes on the Facebook group- "oh what the hell is this ship, apparently it was in one episode for 4 seconds, I don't care about this. Oh what's the other ugly mess, it's Ship X with bits from Ship Y, I don't even know what episode/series this was in."

Then there's people like me who are like "The USS Curry, awesome! The Centaur is the coolest thing ever!" And think it's so cool to actually hold a ship like the Kyushu or the Cheyenne Class in your hand and look at it from angles you've never seen before. A ship you've only ever seen in partially blurry photos and you certainly never thought you would own yourself.

I remember the Fact Files did a file on the Freedom Class in probably 1998, but it was only profile views (side, front, back, top, bottom) no 3D perspective. I'd never even heard of the ship before that, so I remember at 13 years old being fascinated by it. Now to think 20 years later at 33 years of age I actually have a model of it on my desk.. is almost surreal.

So yeah, for me I'm a fan of them. I mean I still pick and choose which ships I buy, as I have from the beginning. Working it out of the 122 models so far in the regular line I have 75 of them. I can't really even describe my rule, basically it's if I like the look of it I'll get it. VOY: Scorpion is one of my favourite Trek episodes, and I love Species 8472, but the model of their bioship just never really grabbed me so I gave that one a miss. Other like the Klingon Raptor I can barely even remember the episode ENT: Sleeping Dogs, but I simply like the design of it. And so that's the way I still do it when each issue comes out.

I am finding now I do buy the "alien issues" less and less, but when they're often things like cargo ships and freighters now (I mean was anyone really wanting that ENT Ferengi ship?) or something dull like the Sulliban Cell Ship, I'm not that surprised Eaglemoss admit the Federation ships sell better. But hey it saves me space and money to skip an issue or two so no biggie :)

You just described me to a fault.

One of the saddest things I ever did was sell my complete set of the Fact Files. One of these days I'm going to go back and get them all again now that I'm a little more solvent. Probably after this main subscription ends. Desperate times make people do stupid things. I mean to rectify that mistake.

I think Eaglemoss have exhausted the non-Starfleet ships I am interested in, but as long as they keep doing good Starfleet ships, I will keep buying them. With the variants and kitbashes, it's getting tricky. I regret buying the Curry and sure am hell not getting the Yeager. But it seems like they will keep doing ones I find worthwhile in the short term: looking forward to the Freedom and the Princeton; I would get the Nebula-class Melbourne if they really do it.

I'd like the FJ Saladin and the Dreadnought, but I don't know where they stand in terms of licencing. Isn't there some issue there?

I'd be interested in a V'ger, a Scimitar, a Narada and a USS Buran (DSC) if they ever came out.

I'd figure the Buran is pretty much a shoe-in, though it'll probably be marked as the USS Yeager, since that's the first ship of that class we saw. I'd prefer it to be Lorca's ship, but what are you going to do?

They're owned by FJ's estate. His daughter wasn't happy that the DISCO people used a UFP seal similar (but not identical) to her father's version without credit/compensation.

Reading how much the alien designs are not popular, it is quite a risk for Eaglemoss to make the Klingon monstrosities from DIS. Of the designs I have seen, I can not find one I like. (Reading about the thought process behind the changes to the Enterprise, I would be curious to know if they had legal rights issues to the designs of the Klingon ships.)

pretty sure they’re clear on rights issues.

the veq’largh is the only disco klingon ship i’m interested in, but i’m popping for the bird of prey out of morbid curiosity.

I'm a completionist so I get everything. I've even bought one of each of the different designed binders just for completions sake! However, I won't be getting any of the DIS line of ships. Can't stand the show and even though I do like some of the Federation ship designs the Klingon ships are absolutely horrid. I truly can't stand what they did with those.

Not necessarily, as it turns out. For some weird reason they seem to be prohibited from using original designs from previous Treks.

Just bought that Enterprise shuttlepod model off of ebay today. It's pretty much the only one of the shuttle pack models I really wanted to own. Looking forward to displaying it with the extra-large NX-01.

ETA: I'll be attending the Eaglemoss panel at Destination Star Trek Germany at the end of the month. Does anyone know if they's show anything new there?

Wow...just...fucking...wow.

I just read through that whole thread and it's just patently absurd how screwed up the Trek rights have gotten thanks to those shitstain lawyers running the show. I hope that at least some of this will become a non-issue when CBS and Paramount re-merge with Viacom, but it appears that someone sold off the rights to the TOS Enterprise design to parties unknown!

It does bring to mind the question that, if the TOS-E herself has been donated to the Smithsonian, could a legal argument be made that it now exists in the public domain as an iconic symbol of American culture? Taking shots in the dark with that one, but of all the designs in the Trek pantheon, I would think that the TOS-E would have the least amount of troubles. That and the original D-7. Shows what I know, I guess.

I genuinely couldn't believe that - it seemed to make no sense and I assumed Eaves had been misquoted and misunderstood.

Having read the full quotes, it explains a lot about Discovery's visual design choices, especially the "no round nacelles" rule.

Well, all of the posts in question have been deleted - so it’s possible that Eaves himself misunderstood.

Particularly since the “25%” thing isn’t how copyrights work (otherwise there’s an argument that Axanar had a case - I guess we also know from Axanar that CBS hasn’t weirdly split up the IP rights, because that was one of their claims that was thrown out by the judge). I suppose it’s possible that someone told Eaves “Legal won’t let you do that” - I’ve actually done that myself, when the true response is “the business doesn’t want to do that”, because people seem to accept the former without question, while they tend to want to fight the latter.
