then make jokes for teenagers and young adults, not fart jokes, that's stuff for kids' shows!
I get what you're saying, but in context it wasn't just a cheap fart joke; it was a good character moment of everyone else just enjoying the ridiculousness of the moment (as they likely would in real life) and Kelrec just being too stuck in his own head and boiling over. It's definitely not the only way they could've done it, but it worked really well, for me at least.

And it indirectly led to this great dialogue in the follow-up, which I think is a good way of reframing how one looks at the joke too:

"So here's the thing: I understand why you feel I abandoned Starfleet. You've had to live in absolutes. But if you make a judgment without context [...] you'll have a hell of a time getting people to trust you or your cadets."

And it'd nice to see a DQ reference aside from the Borg or the Talaxian Furfly.
Maybe someone can order a Blizzard?

Though Hirogen Prime and Kazon Prime were seen on-screen in a display early in the episode for whatever that's worth.

They didn't want to build an entire set for it.
This. People forget that these shows are much lower budget than they appear. That's also why they went to a holoprogram of Ten Forward in the middle of Picard season 3. I remember gripes that the writers were being lazy. They weren't out of ideas; they were out of cash.

This is where I point out, once again, that even the sainted Jean-Luc Picard got stabbed in a bar fight when he was a cocky young cadet.

That Starfleet cadets sometimes behave rashly and immaturely is old news at this point . . . .

I harp on this because I still remember some folks clutching their pearls over the bar fight in the 2009 reboot movie. "But Starfleet cadets would never behave like that! They're best of the best of evolved humans in a utopian future!"

Never mind "Shore Leave," "Tapestry," or even "The Trouble with Tribbles."

I'm sure that there are a lot of Generals/Captains/military leaders over the course of history who got into fights/pulled pranks while at the Academy or before they rose to prominence.

Hell, Chester Nimitz ran the destroyer he was commanding aground on a sand bar his first day on the bridge.

Instead of drumming him out, which was the correct course of action, the senior officer in charge of the Academy gave Nimitz a second chance and he rose in rank to head the Pacific Fleet during World War II.

I thought that was lovely and I enjoyed every bit of it. Naysayers, nitpickers, grumpy asshats be damned. I also got a little weepy at one point. As a mom and a grandma I kind of like seeing young people learning, making stupid mistakes like we all did, and in the process of growing into their true, best selves - with added sci-fi kung fu action.

Somehow I missed Jayden was wearing a skirt early on in the episode.

And was the Sisko voice voiceover taken from a specific DS9 episode, or was it Disney-style AI?

Neither. It was from a spoken-word album Brooks did in 2006. It was used here with his permission.

I cried twice- once when Jake first appeared and again when Sisko spoke at the end.

Yep. It's stuff like this or every planet is Vancouver.

I may have got teary eyed but .. no that was someone else.
I REALLY was not expecting Avery Brook's voice. Very glad Cirroc Lofton came back for this one.

Does anyone get M*A*S*H PA System guy vibes from the announcer? I feel like they would have done the morning wood joke back then if they could have gotten away with it.

Looks like Sam touched a very sensitive subject in the Doctor. He clearly hurts over losing so many treasured friends over the centuries and doesn't want to openly discuss the deaths that have shaped him.
I think that was touched upon in the pilot as well
What kind of species thinks it's a good idea to put holes in their spoons when eating food?
An Alien one.
Hrm, apparently he was on the under-18 laser tag team before coming to the academy at least...

I guess if he's 17, the future chose to adopt European drinking age laws instead of American ones. lol
His species may have a different ideal of "maturing".

mostly. I knew it was going to have some DS9 related content but the last time I got my hopes up it was just seeing a Quark's franchise
There's a whole episode of Lower Decks with the crew visiting DS9 and dealing with Kira/Quark.

And another with them visiting Fereginar and dealing with Rom/Leta.

I guess you avoided spoilers?
Even though I've watched all 5 episodes so far, I wasn't really interested in this particular premise from the get go and haven't gone out of my way to see any of the previews/trailers.

It's kinda been refreshing to see them with very little to no advanced indication of what they would entail.

I got so used to hunting down every tidbit for all the other Trek shows before they aired in the past, that I'm finding this time around I'm enjoying not knowing.

It is a bit strange no one at any point mentioned Sisko's child with Kassidy. It was probably just an oversight, the alternative is a pretty dark story not that we should shy away from dark stories of course
