"After being on the run since age 6, 21-year-old Caleb, a brilliant street kid, is offered the chance of a lifetime: to join the first new Starfleet Academy class in San Francisco in over a century. There's just one problem – the person offering him the spot is newly-minted Chancellor Nahla Ake, the Starfleet captain who sentenced his mother to Federation prison 15 years ago..." - TrekCore.com

After a couple of years of news, pictures and promos, what remains to be seen are the fans' reactions, and whether or not it can actually capture a bit of that mainstream success they're hoping for. This also looks to be the first Trek series to be cancelled before even airing. I have my own opinions on all of that and I'm sure it's the same as what almost everyone else is thinking but you still have to have that "wait and see" attitude. The show will no doubt have a lot of strengths and weaknesses. The "starfleet academy" idea has been around for decades. Let's see what they do with what could possibly be their one and only chance.

First comment... Love the episode title.

Well, they haven’t said anything official yet, but right now there are no new episodes ordered after the ones they are just finishing filming. So while there hasn’t been an active decision (yet) to cancel it, it’s effectively going to end after season two, which might be a distinction without a difference. However, I do wonder when the (latest) point in time would be where a decision like that would have to be made. Right after filming is finished on season two? When post-production has wrapped for that season (which can take up to a year or so after filming, Kurtzman said in a recent interview)? Or even later still? How long can they afford to have those sets standing in the studio? Will be interesting to see how it all shapes up.

I am ignorant on these things - but are the sets left in place between filming blocks? I understand you would keep them up for back to back filming (like Picard 2-3 ... oh but, except there were different sets). Do (did) they leave them up and redress for other use in between. Or is the sound stage just sat there doing nada during hiatuses?

I couldn’t say with any sort of authority either, but it’s my understanding that they can’t just store them all away, because the cost of rebuilding them every time would also be pretty huge. My guess would be that the largest parts are left standing between seasons, while smaller portions of the sets can be stored away. It’s neither here nor there, but just a few days ago I watched the wonderful documentary “One Last Adventure” about the making of the final season of Stranger Things, and there they actually trashed (!) parts of the sets they already filmed in during production of the season, while they were still filming for the season! So my guess would be that when a production is finished, those sets won’t be stored indefinitely.

Wait, you’re positing it’s effectively going to end because, the day before the series and first-season premiere airs, and while still working on the second season, they haven’t yet ordered the third season?

I mean, I wouldn’t be shocked if that happens anyway, what with the corporate reshuffling. But it seems an odd proof.

Well, I think around this time would normally be when they announce something like this, yeah. But also, the Skydance/Paramount merger and the reorientation of Trek to the big screen that came with it are indications that they aren’t interested in producing more streaming Trek right now. On the other hand, there have been reports that Kurtzman has said he’s still slated to produce more Trek for Paramount. Who knows what that will entail … The bottom line is, right now we just don’t know. But there are indications that SFA won’t go beyond two seasons.

I don't expect anything beyond the two seasons. But the series hasn't been cancelled, and the first two episodes are airing overnight. So, technically, SFA isn't a series that was cancelled before airing.

Thanks for spoiling that, TrekCore!

My gut tells me there will be more. Alex Kurtzman's optimistic comments about the future combined with his previously stating that Academy is a 4-year story makes me think that 2 won't be the end.

If it is, then oh well. It wouldn't be the first time my gut has lead me astray.

If ACADEMY doesn't do well in its first season, there definitely won't be a third. Among the reasons, the recent merger and Kurtzman's contract expiring at the end of the year

I haven't really been that excited for this new series but I'm open to giving it a shot. It's also Star Trek so I will at least try to stick with it for the season and see what happens. Hopefully there are things here that I do enjoy and maybe having low expectations is a good thing.

God was this awful. I don't think I have ever seen a Star Trek show this bad. They simultaneously paid too much AND not enough attention to canon. The characters all acted like young people. No one was making stilted speeches and using bizarre stiff mannerisms. There was too much or not enough hooking up. Just awful. What's that?
::covers microphone:: what? Comes out tomorrow? Probably in the evening? :: Uncovers microphone ::
My apologies, I will return in 24 hours once it is available for me to not watch yet complain about.

It's good! Don't skip the opening sequence ;)
I'm sure it is, but I hope it's a slightly longer sequence than usual. Going from the TOS Enterprise to the A to the D to the Defiant to Voyager to the NX-01 to Discovery to the Discoprise, then to land on the 60th Anniversary logo seems like a lot, visually, in such a quick amount of time. Though I'm sure somehow they'll make it work.
