Now we just had snow in the Boston area. I don't feel like shoveling yet. There's an evil combination of snow and rain out there. I'll wait 'til it stops raining. So, I have another perfectly good opening to re-watch Section 31...

I'd rather rewatch Section 31 than shovel snow. But that's a pretty low bar.

I'll stick to shoveling snow. It's finally stopped raining and it's the lesser of two bitter pills. Snow, water, slush... and it'll freeze into ice by tomorrow if I don't do it tonight. Ugh.

And at least after I shovel it all, I'll feel like I'll have accomplished something worthwhile today. Then I'll watch... drum-roll... Babylon 5!

I've stopped talking about Section 31 because I don't believe in beating a dead horse. It's awful, and what else is there to say?

But then I just thought of something and I can't not share it. You know how I've been alternating between a re-watch of DS9 and first-watch of B5? I've also now thrown VOY into the mix, since I got up to the point where it starts in DS9's run. Anyway. This week, I did the DS9 episode, I just did the VOY episode, and I wanted to take a break before the B5 episode. Have to pace them out.

So, I thought to myself, "I have a gap. Why don't I re-watch Section 31 to see if I was too hard on it?" But, nope. I changed my mind. Instead, I put on more Dark Shadows. A soap opera from the '60s about a vampire. I had a great time watching that instead of S31.

... but I think I'll just dye my hair. I need to do a touch-up. I don't want those grays showing. And then, of course, I'll wash it!

Agreed. The old dark shadows soap is a thousand times better than section 31. The writers on that show knew how to write quality fiction.

The soundtrack has been released.

I gotta say, I found the soundtrack surprisingly enjoyable. I don’t remember noticing much of that in the movie, but listening to the score as a separate entity I found there’s some really cool music there. I’m still bugged Russo re-used (quoted?) the old Borg cue for the Mirror Universe scenes, but even if you ignore that there’s some energetic pieces on there.

By the way, am I imagining things, or are there several instances (particularly throughout both “The Baraam” and “Georgiou and Alok”) where there’s allusions to Lalo Shifrin’s original Mission: Impossible tunes? Not direct melody lifts, but certainly very similar melodies. I find it hard to imagine that this was not one of Russo’s sources of inspiration.

Recently I’ve become a bit of a fan of Russo’s work. His score for Ripley is one of my favorite pieces of film music from the last few years. Listening to that is almost like taking a journey in your mind. Can definitely recommend people checking that out.

A Lieutenant Picard timeline would save countless lives on Frontier Day. And also that timeline did NOT end up being a Borg ruled galaxy as Picard immediately assumed would happen (and which Q quipped in response "You're not that important"). Which makes you wonder if Shaw's claim that Picard causes the galaxy-threatening problems he then solves ("You boys have a real chicken and egg thing going" as he says to Picard and Riker) has some truth to it.
I'd just assume all that gubbins happened to Thomas Holloway instead. The man's a menace.

Thomas Holloway's a lot hotter than Picard so he and Crusher would've been popping out kids before he got assimilated. And unlike with Picard, she'd never dream of ghosting him (unless a candle's involved).

Had a thought about Rachel Garrett at the start of the film, she's all about the rules right, only cares about doing what is allowed by her superior officers has zero inclination to colour outside the lines so why was she attached to this team? Did someone see some untapped potential in her? Was she extraordinary?
More likely she was encouraged to take the assignment in order to get experience outside her primary field of interest, which would help give her a more diverse background which would help her chances of someday achieving Command. The Disco novels did something similar with Lorca, where he was at one point serving an assignment in charge of an out of the way science outpost despite his primarily tactical officer background.

Does starfleet really care that much about pushing all of their officers to achieve their maximum potential or having diverse backgrounds. They always seem to just let people do their own things and then heap all their attention on the ones that shine.

There are loads of older officers who languished in the ensign/lieutenant range and Good Shepherd made it seem like forcing the three underperforming crew members on away missions to push them out of their comfort zones and challenge them to do more and be better was out of the ordinary. It seems more likely starfleet sweep the unremarkable under the rug and just transfer them to places better suited if it doesnt pan out until eventually you hit starbase 80.

Starfleet is a fictional organization subject to the whims of the writers.
